The history of Washington begins with General George Washington's purchase of 4 lots on which to build Fort Wayne in 1791; however, only 2 are still used for housing today (the other lot is now occupied by Purdue University). When Indiana Territory was created on January 15, 1802 it included all present-day Posey County except for what is now Evansville; accordingly, Fort Wayne became its county seat and Indianola (later Elkhart) became its capital until May 14th when New Albany took over that role due to overcrowding at New Albany Arsenal caused by war production being relocated there from nearby Vincennes while also constructing new artillery batteries at New Albany Creek near present day Terre Haute (and later White Sands). On October 3rd, 1835 – days after James K Polk had been elected President – Indianapolis was incorporated as a town due to an act voted upon by the legislature under Emergency Acts passed during Andrew Johnson's presidency; this event marked "the inception" or "beginning"of what would become known as "Indianapolis' rapid growth." What followed were decades of prosperity for Indy based largely on manufacturing/commerce interests along with strong political support from members such as Mayor David Dixon who played an important role early on in creating future downtown district plans/ zoning ordinances etc.; including much recent development which continues unabated to this day despite significant environmental concerns about potential negative impacts associated with some current projects currently under way or proposed - reasons why I&I have taken an interest recently & continue to do so (& others involved have done likewise too)

Washington and his men built a small log cabin here, which served as their headquarters until they erected a larger structure nearby. One such business that flourished was The Dineen & Sons Milling Company, which manufactured flour and other goods from wheat grown in this area. By 1830, however, conditions in Washington were becoming too difficult and it voted to secede from the United States. It would become an independent state called Indiana on November 3rd of that year.
