It included many Native American tribes who had been pushed out by European settlers over the previous decade or so: The Shawnee natives were particularly impacted by this process. On July 16th, 1787 – four days after George Washington became President – he issued an Executive Order establishing Indiana Territory with its capital at Fort Wayne along the Wabash River opposite Lake Erie

The town grew slowly for a few years until it exploded in population in 1849 when an railroad station was built in the town. In 1860, the towns of Granger and Northville were established nearby and soon after other small villages began to form around them. By 1870, Washington had become one of the largest cities in Indiana with a population of over 10,000 people.
