The United States Army has a long and rich history in Washington, Indiana. The original 13th Infantry Regiment was organized on November 3, 1775, and served with distinction during the American Revolution. In 1814, the regiment was redesignated as Company A of the 2nd Infantry Regiment. On July 14, 1861, Company A was consolidated with Company F of the 1st Infantry Regiment to form the 1st US Cavalry Regiment. The regiment served honorably throughout the Civil War until it was disbanded on October 16, 1865. During Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War, many African Americans were enlisted in companies within the army. These units were known as black regiments and given separate armories and uniforms apart from white units. In 1898, a new brigade formed from scratch at Fort Riley under command of Major General John Jumper Johnson and designated as 3rd Brigade (African American) United States Army Corps field artillery brigade numbered 5017th Field Artillery Battalion which operated two howitzers along with two batteries of Rochelle Park Battery (Light Artillery). This battalion reorganized on August 8 1914 as 4th Brigade (African American) United States Army Corps field artillery brigade numbered 5018th Field Artillery Battalion which operated four howitzers along with four batteries of Rochelle Park Battery (Heavy Artillery). On December 15 1915 this brigade was redesignated as 2nd Brigade (All-American) United States Army Corps field artillery division number 7031st Division Artillery which served concurrently with 511th Division Philippine Constabulary Field Artillery Brigade in Manila Campaign. World War II began with mobilization for Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941 announced by President Franklin D Roosevelt On September 20 1942 Emperor Hirohito issued Order No 985 requesting all Japanese nationals residing in our country to report at their places of business within 48 hours or be arrested without delay for treason against Japan On October 12 1942 Japanese forces invaded Rabaul Island located adjacent to Australian mainland On October 15 1942 Japanese forces landed at Milne Bay near Melbourne Australia In early December 1942 Japanese forces attacked Australian naval base at McLaren Beach 400 miles north west of Perth Australia Between December 8-10 1942 large numbers of Australian soldiers died when Japanese torpedo boats sunk three supply vessels off Cape York Peninsula Queensland Australia By February 1943 most military assets including airfields had been destroyed by Allied bombing raids In late 1945 all remaining Japanese personnel were invited to surrender unconditionally or face summary execution
Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the seat of Brown County. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Washington was founded on July 3, 1809 by Major General David Forbes as Fort Washington, then called Fort Dearborn after his headquarters near that location. The first settler in Washington was James Denny and his wife Ann who arrived in 1814 from Illinois along with their four children. That year also saw the founding of Fort Wayne by John Palfrey and others under command of Major General David Forbes on what is now Canal Street just east of what is now Monument Circle. In 1815, Washington became an organized town when it received a charter from the state legislature which granted it "an incorporation as a town." The first post office in Washington opened in 1816 under the name Independence but changed its name to Union soon after to avoid confusion with nearby Fort Dearborn which had been renamed for George Rogers Clark since he become governor of Indiana in 1824. In 1830, Washington annexed downtown Carroll Township (now part of Carmel) to form a larger municipality; this annexation resulted in much ribbing among residents because it occurred during prohibition days when alcohol was outlawed throughout most of America but not yet legalized within Brown County! In 1840, when Brown County was created from Lawrence County following Indian Wars fought there between American forces and Native Americans, Washington's position as county seat became an essential part of local government and remained so until 1907 when Georgetown replaced it as county seat due to population growth within Brown County only! Throughout its history there has been much civic activity including many school district meetings held at various public buildings such as Ladd’s store on Main Street where business leaders would meet with legislators about issues affecting their districts; courthouse construction took place largely without assistance from private individuals or companies due to legislation favoring public-private partnerships! On November 3rd 1861 while fighting ISU students occupying UIUC dormitories across campus over tuition hikes sparked subsequent unrest that ultimately led to President Abraham Lincoln calling out federal troops into Indianapolis; federal troops burned down several UIUC buildings before returning home without any arrests or damage done! This event helped spur Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s push for passage of the Civil Rights Act OF 1964 – one hundred years later – which remains oneof America’s most successful anti-discrimination laws ever passed!
