The Marine Corps has been deployed in many different places throughout the years and there is no one history of the Marines that can be completely comprehensive. This paper will focus on Warsaw, Indiana, where they have been stationed for over 40 years. Warsaw was given their first Marine Barracks in 1951 and currently has 10 barracks buildings, a Marine Air Station (MARS), a Transitory Naval Supply Center (NSSC) and an amphibious assault ship, USS George Washington. The MARS is home to Squadrons 1-19 and 2-15; the NSSC houses stores, warehouses and other support facilities for the corpsmen and marines assigned to various units based in Warsaw. Additionally, numerous Marines Reserve Battalions are located throughout Warsaw including: Company D (1st Battalion), 3rd Marine Regiment; Company E (2nd Battalion), 5th Marine Regiment; Company K (3rd Battalion), 7th Marine Regiment; Company L (4th Battalion), 11th Marine Regiment; company M (5th Battalion), 13th Marine Regiment; company P (6th battalion), 15thMarineRegiment;; Battery A/1/12 Artillery from Third Brigade Combat Team 3rd Infantry Division also headquartered here. Over time the Marines have become known for their hard work, dedication and combat skills. From deployments to OperationEnduring Freedom(OEF) they have shown themselves as a stalwart force that stands with America during her time of need. In memory of those who have served before them, each servicemember is awarded a commemorative service medal which may include an inscription such as "For Thee We Salute" or "Loyalty Through And After The War". The Marine Corps was created as part of the Continental Marines, which were constituted on April 12, 1775. The Continental Marines fought against British forces during the American Revolutionary War. In 1812, during the War of 1812, marines fought at Yorktown and Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1919-1920, marines participated in World War I as part of U.S. Expeditionary Force Europe. During World War II they served in various theaters including Pacific Theater and European Theater where they became known for their heroism and fighting spirit. They also played a significant role in victory over Japan at Okinawa 1945 and later took part in Operation Neptune’s Spear which led to Japanese surrender in August 1945. Since its inception, the Marine Corps has undergone a number of changes including being reorganized into three infantry divisions (1st Infantry Division; 2nd Infantry Division; 3rd Infantry Division) as well as four SPECIALty units (Marine Scout unit; Naval Aviation Unit; Marine Air Group; Amphibious Unit). Additionally, each infantry division now contains two rifle battalions while cavalry units have been merged into other infantry divisions or disbanded altogether. Today, there are more than 350Kaiser Wilhelm C-130 Hercules transport aircraft carrying supplies and troops around the world with an additional 100 Kaisers Wilhelm C-295A cargo planes providing airlift for special operations missions such as those conducted by Operation Neptune’s Spear Unified Command force or Special Purpose Units such as SEAL Team 6 or Delta Force “the boys from Boston” operating beyond enemy lines within Afghanistan etc...
