Coffee production increased rapidly during World War I as more people turned to caffeine as an energy drink; however, during the war bombings caused many destroyed cafés which led to a decrease in production overall. Consequently, espresso became more rare until the mid-20th century when it resumed its popularity due to new innovations like variable pressure brewing and cappuccino machines.

The first Polish settlers arrived in what is now Warsaw in 1814. They were part of a wagon train that traveled from Illinois toIndiana. In 1830, they founded the town of Warsaw on the north bank of the White River. At that time, it was one of only a few settlements in what is now Putnam and Elkhart Counties. Warsaw experienced some growth during the early years of its existence. In 1846, it became a village and was renamed Warsaw after King Stanislaus II Augustus Poniatowski who had helped support Polish national aspirations during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The name stuck and has been used ever since to describe Warsaw Township (now Putnam County) and parts of Elkhart County.
