The history of the Warsaw, Indiana Army National Guard began in 1903 when a group of men from the town of Warsaw decided to form their own unit. The first soldiers were recruited from local farmers and lumberjacks who agreed to serve in a volunteer regiment. On December 3, 1903, the regiment was renamed the 1st Infantry Regiment and became part of the 8th Infantry Brigade in the 9th Division under General John Pershing. The brigade was mobilized on December 10, 1907 and served during World War I as a garrison force at Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and finally at Camp Funston near Baghdad, Iraq. After World War I ended, the regiment was decommissioned on July 15, 1919. In 1922 it was reactivated again as part of 7th Infantry Brigade but this time it became known as 2nd Battalion (Independent) Polish-Indian Guards Regiment before being redesignated 1st Battalion (United States). The battalion served in World War II as an infantry battalion with duty in Europe and North Africa until itsactivation on October 14, 1944 as Headquarters Battery for 4th Infantry Division Artillery. FollowingWorld War II the battalion returned to civilian life before being reactivated again on September 25th 1959 as Headquarters Battery for 1st Cavalry Division Artillery. On November 5th 1987 Headquarters Battery reassumed its original title of 2nd Battalion (United States) Polish-Indian Guards Regiment before being disbanded on October 6th 1989 due to budget cuts within artillery units throughout America. Today's WarsawArmyNationalGuard is made up mostlyof veteran soldiers who have served our country through multiple wars including Desert Storm/ISIS/ Afghanistan/Iraq etc... these Soldiers have put their livesOn hold countless times so that we can protect our citizens! Warsaw, Indiana was founded on December 12, 1814 by a group of Ohio pioneers as the town of Warsaw. The name was derived from the Polish word Warszawa (Wyszkowice), meaning "the city". The town grew rapidly and soon became an important trading center in the area. In 1827, Warsaw became the county seat of Wayne County. In 1851, Warsaw was incorporated as a village and remained so until 1925. In 1907, Warsaw annexed the neighboring community of New Palestine to its borders. New Palestine had been founded by American Civil War veterans as a Christian colony to help provide support for local war-widows and orphans. Upon annexation, New Palestine lost all its civil rights and privileges and became just another Palestinian village within Warsaw's boundaries. During World War II, Warsaw served as one of six U.S.-occupied cities in Poland. On September 15th, 1944, following Japan's surrender at Hiroshima, the city was liberated by Allied forces under General Dwight D Eisenhower and Mayor Edward Jankowski
