The Wabash Police Department Gift History is a history of the department that began in 1871. The gift giving tradition within the department has continued through many administrations and continues to this day. In 1871, the Wabash Police Department was organized when three officers were hired by Mayor John A. Hindman to help with policing duties in the town. The first police officer on duty was Deputy Sheriff John Fenton. For many years, the department would give free firearms to citizens who brought them in for inspection or for protection during law enforcement operations. In 1902, Captain Rufus Jensen became captain of the department and ordered all departments in town to start exchanging gifts with one another. This order is still followed today with different departments sending gifts back and forth between themselves. Gifts have ranged from appliances to jewelry to books! The town of Wabash, Indiana is located in the state of Indiana. The population of Wabash was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Wabash County were Frenchmen who came to this area from Illinois in 1788. They built a trading post on the banks of the Wabash River. They called their community "Waltham." In 1802, Major General John Brown and his forces invaded Illinois and destroyed most of that state's civil government. In response, Henry Clay decided to form a new government in western Michigan Territory under the command of General James Wilkinson. Wilkinson appointed Major General David Wilcox as governor of Illinois Territory and ordered him to march eastward to attack Brown's army at Prairie du Chien (now Black Hawk) Creek near Waltham. However, before Wilcox could arrive, Brown surrounded him and captured Chicago with his army on July 4, 1804. This event helped lead to the War for independence and made Mexico an independent country. Wabash is a village in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Wabash is located on the Wabash River. It was founded in 1816 by Antiago Wagoner and his brother George. Wabash became part of the Union after the American Civil War and was Oneida County's capital from 1865 to 1867. After being moved to its present location in 1887, Wabash began developing into an agricultural center as new water rights were acquired and more farmers arrived. Manufacturing interests also developed in the area during this time; a cotton gin was built in 1903 and a flour mill built in 1907. In recent years, however, agriculture has become the dominant economic activity with many families still working on family farms today.

This event is widely remembered as the beginning of what would become known as German-speaking culture within Wabash County. In 1951, Wabash became one of six counties (along with Marengo, Newton Township, Ripon Township, LaPorte Township, and Dearborn County) to be merged into neighboring Union Township. The merger resulted in an increase in population due to increased commuting opportunities for residents withinUnion Township and outside of it. As part of this merger process, most businesses located withinWabash were closed or moved out when they were combined with other business districts within Union Township; however most new businesses that opened during this time period originated fromwithinWabash itself. On December 12th, 1984 Wabasha High School students walked off campus after becoming involved in a political protest against then-President Ronald Reagan's decision to end affirmative action programs at US universities
