The Wabash National Guard was organized on November 25, 1814. The first unit to be raised in the state of Indiana was Company G, First Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry. On December 12, 1814, the regiment was redesignated as Company H and organized at Fort Wayne. In 1815, the company moved to Paris where it garrisoned the fortifications against French forces during the War of 1812. The regiment disbanded on May 1, 1816. In 1830-1831, Company I (First Regiment) served under General David Lane in a campaign against Native Americans in Minnesota Territory. In 1833-1834, Company K (Third Regiment) served with General John Custer in his advance into Nebraska Territory during the Dakota War. On February 8, 1840, President James K. Polk signed legislation creating the Wabash National Guard at Wabash Depot along with other new units created by that act including the Keystone State Militia and two companies from Kentucky's Bluegrass Brigade under brigadier general Rufus Kinghorn. These organizations were placed under command of Major General Elijah Prentiss who arrived in town on March 7th for command beginning April 1st. The brigade numbered 157 men and included nine cannon batteries and thirty men mounted riflemen also known as dragoons or lancers who had never before been fielded in American combat except for some token engagements during Mexico's insurgency against Ulysses S Grant’s occupation of that country which began on September 16th of that year when Mexican troops opened fire upon American gold seekers near Lincoln County line killing five men and wounding twenty others over a period of four days ending October 5th after which Grant ordered an immediate withdrawal all American forces out of Mexico without delivering any stores or munitions to Mexican forces still present throughout much of Chihuahua Décimo Provincias where Mexicans continued to resist Grant’s military occupation until January 6th when they finally capitulated unconditionally becoming part of United States territory following its victory over Mexico resulting in what is now Arizona Republic and Sonora Department being added to modern day United States Federal District Arizona less Mormon settlements located therein eastward extending into Utah Valley near Colorado River Nevada border

In 1861, the Military Division of Ohio was created and the National Guard was integrated into that division. The Military Division of New York was created in 1916 and the National Guard was also integrated into that division. The Military Division of Pennsylvania became an independent military district in 1947 and the National Guard was again integrated into that district. The Military District of Utah became an independent military district in 1959 and the National Guard was againintegrated into that district. On July 1, 1970, all military districts were merged into the newly formed Department of Defense (DoD).
