Wabash, Indiana is a small town in southwestern Indiana and is the county seat of Wabash County. The population was 3,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Wabash County was George Armstrong Custer on July 5, 1817. A post office called Nappanee was established in 1825, and by 1830 had become the largest town in Wabash County. The first school in what is now Wabash County was built on the site of present-day Nappanee by 1827. By 1865 all but one school were closed due to lack of funding, and only one high school remained open until it merged with Central High School in 1984. After becoming a consolidated city in 1968, Nappanee lost its status as county seat when Wabash became an unincorporated community within newly created Dyer Township. Wabash has been home to several significant events throughout its history: In 1898 Wabashing Mayor John Ladd donated land for a new public library which would serve as a model for libraries across America; this gave rise to the term "Ladd Library" (later shortened to "Library") City Hall building still stands today at 368 E 9th Street - also known as "the brick courthouse". In 1912–13 construction began on what would eventually become North Central High School; this single-story addition remains one of downtown Nappanee's most recognizable landmarks to this day. In 1969–70 voters approved annexation by neighboring Pekin Township; since then Wabashing has served as both its municipal andCounty government headquarters while Pekin continues to provide services such as police and fire protection through village trusteeship
