Vincennes is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the eastern bank of the river Wabash, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Chicago. The population was 61,953 at the 2010 census. The first European to see what was now Vincennes was a French trader, Pierre François de Lacrosse, in 1716 when he passed through the area on his way from Detroit to trade with the British. De Lacrosse noted that "the country [was] very fertile and woody", but no one had found it yet suitable for settlement. In 1724, General George Washington founded Fort Dearborn on land donated by Jeremiah Dearborn along the southern banks of the Wabash River opposite Vincennes. On January 9, 1725, Washington and his army surprised France's forces under Marquis de Lafayette at Baton Rouge while they were besieging Paris; this victory marked an end to French ambitions in North America and opened up new opportunities for American exploration throughout central Europe. In 1814, during Andrew Jackson's presidential campaign against John Quincy Adams, Vincennes became an important stop on Jackson's itinerary as he campaigned in support of Van Buren over Adams'.
