The history of coffee in Vincennes, Indiana can be traced back to the early 1800s. In 1827, Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother, Jean Conte, set up a small operation near what is now downtown Vincennes. They began selling coffee beans from their home on the river bank. By 1830, they had built a large roasting plant on the north side of town. The business grew rapidly and by 1837 they had produced over 1 million pounds of coffee. In 1840, Nicholas-Jacques Conte married Marie Gaudreau and moved his family to Indianapolis. This new location allowed them to continue producing high quality coffee while also manufacturing products such as sacks of flour and baking powder. The company prospered until it was bought by John D’Arcy McGee in 1872. At this point, the business became known as D’Arcy McGee Coffee Company. It continued to operate until it was sold to Peet's Coffee Corporation in 1961.
Vincennes, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Vincennes County, Indiana, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Vincennes were French missionaries in 1699. The town site was claimed by the British in 1764 as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years' War. The Townsite Resolution (1802) named Vincennes "the place where I should be born." In 1812, an act was passed by Congress to establish a Military Governor's Department for all Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River, which included most of present-day Indiana and Illinois. On March 3, 1814, General Anthony Wayne set out from Fort Dearborn with 5 companies of volunteers to take care of affairs within said territory; heading for Vincennes Junction on his way home from a campaign against Native Americans near Cassville Lake in central Illinois. On December 1, 1800, when Daniel Boone came through this area on his way southward along THE WABASH River he reported finding extensive high land grants surrounding this small village; including parts of what are now Lafayette Township and Posey Township as well aswhat are now portions ofvery much present-day Vincennes Countyincluding some ancient sites such as Stonehenge! There may have been other villages or settlements around here too but these two were likely our earliest known ones! This area became known variously as "Indian Hill", "Moundville" and finally just "Vincennes". Eventually many homes were erected around Indian Hill - during those early years it looked more like an open field than today’s busy downtown core! All those businesses that cropped up over time either because people wanted to trade goods with Indians or because traders traveled here often for wood etc., helped contribute greatly to this growing community! In 1822 Congress created another Military Governor's Department called Prairie Valley under General Scott; this department covered much easternIndiana including modern day Monroe Countyand much westernIllinois including modern day Pike Countyand OhiopyleCountywhich lies east and southeastof today’s Indianapolis MSA! On July 24th1825 US Army Captain John Cushing arrived at Vincennes from Fort Dearbornwith orders to take possessionofthis newMilitary District comprising all present-day Marion CountywesttotheWabashRiver&southtoPortage &Potter CountysouthwestoftheWabashRiverwere added!!!!!! This would be America's first military district!!! And we would continue expanding it throughout its history!!!!! AfterCaptainCushing arriveintothevillageourFirstMayorwas choiceofGeorgeFenton whoself hadbeenelectedaretirement intotheyear 1830!! GeorgeFenton becamethefirstmayorofVINCENNES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
