The Army has a long and proud history in Vincennes, Indiana. The town was founded in 1795 by the French colonists as Fort Dearborn. In 1812, the US military forced the British out of Canada and invaded India. As part of this invasion, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Vincennes on their way to July 4th celebrations in St. Louis. The General stopped at Fort Dearborn for dinner and presented the town with a cannon as a token of appreciation. From then on, Vincennes became an important stop on the road to India and America. In 1862, when Confederate forces attacked Union troops at Fort Donelson, General Ulysses S Grant ordered his army to march into Vincennes to relieve the garrison. After days of hard fighting, Union soldiers managed to take control of the fort and recapture much of Vincennes city center. However, Confederate forces continued to attack Union troops throughout the remainder of that day and night; by morning, most of Vincennes had been destroyed or captured. This victory gave Union forces a significant advantage over Confederate forces near Nashville in Tennessee during that campaign. When American troops occupied Nashville following its fall in 1865, they began looking for new places to stationed their weapons and troopers before returning home. One such place was Fort Gibson outsideVincennes which they decided would be ideal because it was situated between two large rivers – one on each side – making it difficult for enemy fighters from entering or leaving the fort without being detected first. The fort saw limited use until 1885 when it was renamedFort Stevenson after Maj.-Gen Charles Stevenson (Ulysses S., IV), commander-in-chief United States Forces West Africa Command from 1888-1892 who doubled as Commandant at Fort Gibson from 1890-1893 Before his death in 1893 he recommended that Stevenson's original name be restored - henceforth known asFort Stephenson effective October 1st 1893". In 1916 Abraham Lincoln spent some time at Ft Stephenson while he campaigned for reelection against James Buchanan: "It is needless now to rehearse what took place there within these walls but I need not remind you that Mr Lincoln went there several times" (Lincoln History Museum). At least five other presidents also visited Ft Stephenson during their campaigns: Franklin D Roosevelt (1932), Harry Truman (1945), Dwight Eisenhower (1954), John F Kennedy (1963) & Richard Nixon (1969). It is interesting to note that all but four Presidents visited Ft Stephenson within three months of taking office instead of waiting until they were inaugurated!

In 1811, Vincennes became part of the United States when Congress passed an act to admit it into Union as a new territory along with Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The region that would form Indianapolis started to take shape in this time, becoming known as the Victorian section due to waves of immigrants from England and other parts of Europe who had moved there during this period (Lundahl 1990). From 1820-1824, Vincennes grew rapidly thanks to its central location within Indiana and access to trade with surrounding states including Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, and Canada (Furstenberg 1988). By 1830–34 Vincennes had become one of America’s fastest-growing cities with over 1 million residents (Marriott 1960). However during this time period large numbers of English-speaking immigrants also arrived from Ireland and Great Britain while many Irish Catholics had fled Protestant British rule (Dalrymple 1978). This tension led to violence between Protestants and Catholics in downtown Vincennes until finally resolved by a series of treaties signed by President James K. Polk in 1853 that granted religious freedom for all Hoosiers (Reardon 1978). finally becoming official on March 12th that year when General Anthony Wayne surrendered at Fort Dearborn after three years fought against Native Americans at Tippecanoe National Battlefield near present day Lafayette(Moses 1997a) During these times different businesses flourished such as breweries such as Pabst Brewing Company which began production in 1870 followed by Ford Motor Company founded in 1908 which would lead to manufacturing plants throughout north central Indiana today Purdue University – Purdue University – now Purdue Pharma – established itself as a world leader in agriculture through research programs focused on family planning/contraception/pesticides etc In recent decades there have been various redevelopment efforts taking place around Downtown Indianapolis including Phillips 66 Arena being built adjacent to Lucas Oil Stadium housing both professional basketball games and concerts as well as multiple high-end restaurants: Diner illinois located on Meridian Street just east side I-465 & US 14Th St., Zafar’s Chop House located just west side I-465 & SR 574 & Avondale Place across from Lucas Oil Stadium on Carpenter Road are but a few examples The region has seen nearly two dozen rounds of development costing millions dollars with no final product arriving until later because approvals were always given subjectively based upon societal norms rather than real needs or results .
