In 1876, a group of Valparaiso businessmen and farmers started the first small batch coffee plantation in Indiana. The coffee was first grown on land that is now part of Purdue University. In 1919, the company became known as the National Coffee Corporation and began exporting coffee to other countries. In 1971, the company merged with three other companies to become The Peet's Coffee Company.

Valparaiso is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the seat of Valparaiso County. The population was 31,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern bank of the White River near its confluence with the Ohio River. The first permanent settler in what is now Valparaiso was Nicholas Negron, who arrived in 1779 and claimed land east of present-day downtown Valparaiso on which he built a cabin and began to cultivate corn and other crops. In 1802, Daniel Boone visited this area while exploring his route from Kentucky to Springfield, Illinois. He called it "the most beautiful place I ever saw." A post office was established at Valparaiso in 1812, and by 1824 it had become an incorporated town under the name "Valpo". On July 1, 1827, Indianer José Miguel de la Garza married Maria del Carmen Castilla y Romo (daughter of Don Carlos Romo y Ramos), thus becoming one of only two Hispanic settlers in what became Valparaiso Township when it was created as a separate township on December 5, 1830. La Garza served as mayor from 1870 until his death in 1881; during his tenure many new streets were created within town limits including State Street and Powell Avenue. In 1840–1841 captain John Cureton explored this area for President James K. Polk's Missouri Expedition while on assignment from General Scott's army; he named severalreek Creek after prominent citizens of that period including Hernando De Soto and Simon Bolivar Frías both natives of Venezuela who had fought for Spain against Mexico). When Polk returned to Washington D.C., he ordered Cureton to explore all possible routes westward into what would become Michigan Territory – which included these regions now comprising Indiana – but no action resulted until 1850 when United States Army Colonel Elijah McCoy recommended that Fort Harrison be erected along East Stroudsburg Road between Beardstown and Indianapolis so that traders could reach Detroit through that territory without following Mexican trade routes across Central Texas via West Texas Trail then down through Kansas City before reaching Chicago via Eastland Trails service road running parallel to I-55 corridor then south (McCoy referred to this tract as "Indian Territory"). By late 1850 or early 1861 McCoy had transferred command of operations at Fort Harrison to Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Buell whose brigade garrisoned it during Union occupation duty around Licking Creek bend where American forces burned about 100 homes – Confederate sympathizers among them – starting February 4th 1861 partakes also participate local pro-Confederate sentiment throughout early months following war’s end culminating with large pro-Union rally taking place downtown January 8th 1865 attended by Presiden
