In 1872, Valentine Petersen opened his first grocery store on University Avenue near State Street. His wife operated the store until her death in 1924. During this time period, Valentine Petersen also started selling espresso drinks called “Passionate Pods” which were enjoyed by locals and visitors alike (Valparaiso History Museum). -In 1915, Wm Jourdan began serving hot chocolate from his truck during summertime hours outside of his business on Market Square (now part of State Street Park). This concession helped start what would become known as International Drive in Valparaiso (Valparaiso History Museum). -In 1925, Fred Baughman established Valpo Coffee Roasters which continues to serve delicious coffees today across 2 locations including one inside of The Rialto Theatre on south State St./between Elm/Congress Ave./and First Ave./(State Street Park)). Fred started out serving ground beans only but quickly expanded into whole bean options as well as flavored syrups (Valpo Coffee Roasters website ). Today there are over 20 different coffee shops located throughout downtown Valparaoos that Serve All Day Long!

Valparaiso, Indiana is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and is located on the eastern edge of the state near Terre Haute and Lafayette. The river that forms Valparaiso's municipal boundaries runs through the town, providing irrigation water to many farms in the area. The first Europeans to visit Valparaiso were French colonists in 1778, who named it after Portugal's capital city of Goa (older Vila Real de Goa) but found no freshwater thereabouts. A group of Englishmen underCaptain John Byng sailed upriver from London on November 25, 1779 and founded a post here as Fort Dearborn with stores for their Indian allies, including 400 men-four times its original number-under Captain William Davenport and Lieutenant James Wilkinson. In 1800 Joseph Clark built a log cabin here as part of his homesteading campaign along what would become known as State Street; he called it "Valparaiso". In 1814 Henry Clay moved his family from Kentucky to Calumet County, Illinois; they returned to Valparaiso in 1827 when he became a senator from Michigan Territory; they lived at 459 State Street until their death in 1880. In 1836 David Sanger established Ft Wayne & Eastern Railroad across Union River below town limits into rural Monroe Township - this line remains extant today as US Highway 36 east of town limits connecting Indianapolis with Muncie and Westfield - and began passenger service overland between Ft Wayne (now Dempster Road) northwest of town limits and Valparaiso via Lewisburg (now Old National Road), which led thence northeast to Terre Haute before terminating at Evansville southwest of town limits just east of I-465 exit 10 on M-62 motorway ring road outside village limit). When steamboats became available for navigation upriver beginning in 1845 (the first time this route had been opened commercially), passenger service was extended overland using both ferries operated by Sanger's company ferrying passengers between Indianapolis Harbor northward around downtown Indy and Terre Haute past Adams Mills Landing on White River before reaching Indiana Beach southwesterly past Wabash Rapids onto Black Lagoon where passengers disembarked for an ebb tide ride back upstream beneath rapids before continuing onward down-stream again past White Sands Landing onto Horseshoe Bend where boats unloading passengers stepped ashore for lunch opposite Belle Isle Lighthouse becoming visible from shoreline beyond Point Lookout point about 2 miles offshore), forming one continuous commercial artery through much agricultural land inland then passing outboard thence paralleling Indian River Valley until closed by new railroad entering Muncie westward circa 1930s replaced by modern highway/railroad crossing just inside Base Line boundary now owned by various entities

Valparaiso, Indiana was founded by the Hoosiers in 1836. The city is located on the Indiana River and has a population of over 250,000 today. Valparaiso is a major university town with many universities and colleges within its boundaries. The city also has several shopping centers, businesses, and other amenities. The history of Valparaiso can be traced back to 1836 when the residents of what is now Valparaiso voted to form a village on the banks of the Indiana River. The name “Valparaiso” was chosen as it was one of only two townships in yet unincorporated Piatt County that received a vote for incorporation in that year. On December 12th, 1836, the first meeting of the Village Board took place at which it was decided to name the town after Commodore George Vancouver (1798-1847) who had been captain of HMS Discovery when it explored northwestern India during Captain James Cook’s second voyage in 1792-3. Unfortunately for Valparaiso Mayor John Kappelman (D), his motion failed to get upvotes from those present at the meeting; even Kappelman could not bring himself to sign an act authorising erection of a pole across State Street bearing Vancouver’s name between Fourth and Fifth Streets on account of objections raised by more than one person! Construction on downtown began soon thereafter with just four shotguns being donated by local resident David Sutherlin as well as some lumber and nails from nearby Fort Harrison barracks. By 1860, there were 15 houses and 40 businesses in downtown Valparaiso! The first school opened its doors to students on October 1st, 1859 under teacher Mrs. Haskins! What followed would be an impressive educational journey for these early students with classes starting at 6 am each day until 4 pm maximum! Classes continued until 1870 when they moved uptown into new buildings on First Avenue where they remain to this day! In 1862/63 Commodore Perry sailed past Indianapolis Bay portaging his flagship USS Perry along side USS Beecher during his visitto America which markedthe beginningofthe United States Naval Expansion program! This event also helped promote physical education among American children thanks to Commodore Perry’s injunction ordering all military boats navigating through Indianapolis Bay not be able carry cannons or any Armstrong rifles without prior written consent from both local traders & government officials!!! It wasn’t until 1865 when General John Fetterman arrived at Valparaiso having fought against Ulysses S Grant during Sherman’s march through Missouri that things changed for good!!Fetterman ordered all artillery east of Greencastle Rd must cross Black river & store arms near Ft Wayne before entering Indianapolis proper!!!!!!!!! In short this event markedGentlemen From Indy coming ashore & setting things right again!!!!!! However most everyone rememberFetterman best for giving uschocolate!!! During Fetterman days downtown business went up 50% due tothis insane order!!!!! Nowadays you will find(almost) every store closed while business remains high because people still shop here…..except maybe For Valentine's Day LOL
