The Coast Guard gift history in Valparaiso, Indiana began with the creation of the Valparaiso Harbor Patrol in 1925. The Harbor Patrol was a volunteer organization that patrolled the harbor and protected citizens from smugglers and pirates. The patrols were disbanded in 1951, but the Coast Guard continued to exist as an organizational unit until 1971. In 1971, Valparaiso became the first city to be granted a harbor security grant by then-President Richard Nixon. This grant allowed for the construction of two new harbors – one on Saginaw Bay, and another on Toledo Bay. The ports were used for cargo shipping, which was good news for businesses that wanted to do business in those areas. As time passed, more and more people moved into Valparaiso. More people started families, and need for police protection increased along with it. In 1992, Valparaiso received its own police department after years of planning and fundraising. That same year saw the inauguration of President George H.W. Bush as president of United States of America; however, no event occurred at Valparaiso that year due to lack of funding). In 1998-1999, Hurricane Mitch hit California; however, no events took place at Valparaiso because there was not enough money available to pay for emergency response activities. However, during Barack Obama’s term as president (2009-2013), there was an increase in crime activity throughout Central Indiana due to his policies such as higher taxes and less spending by state government officials1 . As a result of this increase in crime activity throughout Central Indiana2 , Governor John Gregg decided it would be necessary to provide additional resources within our local law enforcement agency3 . After much deliberation4 , he chose the Coast Guard as his choice for this resource8 . From then on9 , our coast guard gifts have become increasingly popular among residents in central Indiana10 .

The Valparaiso Coast Guard gift history goes back to 1919 when the first Coast Guard detachment was organized in this town. In that year, the Town of Valparaiso bought a small boat and named it the "Valparaiso" after its founder, Hiram A. Valparaiso. The Coast Guard detachment initially patrolled the waters off of Downtown Valparaiso and around the city limits. In 1951, a larger boat was purchased and renamed the "Plymouth". This vessel became one of our most common patrol boats and frequently assisted with local law enforcement activities as well as providing support for searches and rescues during wintertime. In 1962, another boat was purchased and renamed the "Sweeney". This vessel served as our main rescueboat for many years until it was replaced by our current rescueboat, the "Cape May" in 2003. The present Coast Guard detachment based at Station #2 on High Street in Valparaiso began operation on April 1, 1969. Since that time we have donated many vessels to help protect our community including: two Constellation helicopters (1997), three P-3C Orion aircraft (2002), six MH-60R Seahawk helicopters (2009), eight E-1B Lancer maritime surveillance airplanes (2012) and four HVAC units (2015).

The Coast Guard has been providing assistance to the public since 1790. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect America's coasts and maritime interests, including those of coastal communities and coastal states. In 1915, the Coast Guard introduced a gift program in order to commemorate their service and thank those who support their efforts. The program continues to this day and allows individuals or organizations to give gifts such as jewelry, tools, fishing supplies, or other items that may be used by the Coast Guard in their missions. Gifts can be sent through the mail or delivered directly to the Coast Guard station where they will be awaiting use. The history of the gift program goes back many years and it began with a collection of donated items from commercial businesses along America's coasts. These donations allowed for the purchase of new equipment and materials needed for our operations. From then on, gifts were also accepted from individuals or organizations who wished to show their support for our missions. Valparaiso is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,935 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Purdue University Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Valparaiso were Frenchmen on July 24, 1679. They named the area "Valle Pierre" after Pierre de La Salle, a French explorer and missionary who had explored much of central and eastern North America before his death in 1696. The first European settlement in what is now Hendricks County was made by Dutch fur traders on December 12, 1755 at Fort Amsterdam (now called Prairie du Sac). The early settlers of Valparaiso were primarily farmers and their families. Many of them worked for the local Native American groups that inhabited the area at that time. In 1821, Valparaiso became one of five townships formed from parts of several Indian villages in what is now Hendricks County. The township was named for James Fenton, an Englishman who had bought land along the Ohio River near present-day Terre Haute,Indiana in 1819. In 1837, Valparaiso became one of two townships within Howard Township when it was created from a portion of Hendricks County that had been detached from Jennings Township due to its increasing population size. At first glance it may seem odd that two different townships should have been created within Howard Township – but this was actually done because many people wanted to move away from Evansville because they felt it was becoming too noisy and polluted; however, they continued to live in Jennings Township until their removal in 1906-. In1857-1858 there were three tornadoes which killed six people and damage over $30 000 worth of property throughout Indiana including Valparaiso! One significant event which took place during this time period happened when General Ulysses S Grant delivered his final speech as President ofthe United States at Hampton Hall on April 14th 1865; here he announced the end of Reconstruction following the American Civil War. This event marks quite a milestone for Indiana as it marked the beginningof white flight from then-Slave states such as Missouri and Illinois across state lines into Union territories like Indiana; Valparaiso would be among these areas to experience heavy white migration starting around 1870s!
