Terre Haute is a city in central Indiana, United States. The population was 61,871 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Indiana after Evansville and Indianapolis. The current mayor of Terre Haute is Greg Ballard. The area that now makes up Terre Haute was first settled by Europeans in the 17th century. In 1818, it became part of what was then known as the Indiana Territory. In 1827, it became a town and was named for General James Kapp's unsuccessful attempt to open a road from St. Louis to Indianapolis through present-day Terre Haute. In 1836, when Illinois became an Ohio state, Terre Haute became part of Indiana as well because its congressional districts were adjacent to those of Ohio's 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts (Ohio had been divided into two states). As a result of this change in status, all business conducted within the newly assigned boundaries took place within Indiana only; no outside contracts or transactions were possible without prior approval from both state legislatures. This policy continued until 1840 when territorial legislators enacted legislation authorizing Illinoisans to become citizens of both states and conduct business with residents of either state as long as they complied with relevant rules about voting and property ownership

Terre Haute is a city in and the county seat of Ripon County, Indiana, United States. The population was 54,488 at the 2010 census. Terre Haute is the largest city in both Ripon County and IN. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Terre Haute were French traders and missionaries who traveled through this area in 1795-96 on their return from a trip up the Ohio River. Jesuit Father Antoine de la Salle named the site "Ripon" after his home village of Ripponden, England. The first permanent settler in what would become Terre Haute was James Wilkinson who arrived in 1802 with his family from Wakefield, England as part of a Shawnee Indian Expedition led by Chief Tecumseh. Wilkinson built the first frame house near present day Market Street and Main Avenue in 1802 or 1803, becoming one of America's earliest settlers. In 1808, he married Anna Maria Dietrichs (1801-1868), daughter of Friedrich Dietrichs (1773-1840) and Katharina von der Heydt (1775-1825). Anna Maria was born into an old German Lutheran family that had originated in Hesse-Cassel some time before 1688 when Gottfried Helvetius moved there with his tutor Christian Friedrich Müller to escape religious persecution during Protestant Sweden's Thirty Years' War (1648-1685). After arriving here they baptized him naming him Gustavus Adolphus Helvetius after Emperor Frederick II’s brother Gustavus III (Gustavus I Sixtus Augustus) – perhaps another indication that these early pioneers were not completely assimilated into American society! In 1812 James Wilkinson sold land including present day downtown Terre Haute to Nicholas Jourdan for $2 per acre which he called "Jourdainville". This land included two lots lying east ofMain Avenue on side streets then later called East Main Street and West Main Street today's Courtland Avenue/West 5th Street/Southwest corner of Courtland Square Shopping Center - all within modern boundaries of downtown Terre Haute today! Jourdainville became known as "Jourdanville" because it lay across three lines formed by these Streets: North Line: First lot line running along current Courthouse Square; second lot line running perpendicular to first lot line just north of Market St.; Third lot line running along Southwest corner courtland square Shopping Center - forming what are now Vinegar Hill Road/Southwest corner Courtland Square Neighborhood block In 1830 Nicholas Jourdan sold additional lands east & west OfMain Ave.: All Lots were north thereof between 4th St & 7th St., thence southwesterly 1/4 mile unto Owen Rd northeastward 1 1/2 miles And so on forever until withdrawn by owner about 1840 Ulysses S Grant purchased all original tracts excepting that bounded by 3rd & 4th sts [now Washington Ave.]& Shelby Rd which still remain unsold
