Terre Haute, Indiana is a town in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The name "Terre Haute" was first given to the town by its founder, James H. Doane. In 1824, the Miami and Erie Canal passed through what is now Terre Haute and named it after that route's original terminus in Erie County, Pennsylvania. The first settler in what is now Terre Haute Township was John Addison in 1797. Addison married Sarah Carys who had also come from England with her parents and two sisters as refugees following the American Revolution. She founded a small farm near present-day downtown Terre Haute about 1800 which she named "Carys'.". Another early settler was Nicholas Leary who arrived in 1802 and built a cabin on land he owned south of Main Street known today as Leary Place. The first school in what is now TerreHaute Township was built on this property by Nicholas Leary in 1807 as Cedar Grove School.. A log cabin served as the first post office for what is nowTerrelaune Township on this site from December 7th 1830 until May 25th 1840 when it moved to its current location at State Road 163 next to the modern courthouse.. In 1825 James H Doane established a wagon road east of today's Business District called Dearborn Avenue which ran along present day US Highway 11 (now State Road 165) between Indianola and Mount Carmel.. This wagon road later became known as Rte 2 or Pembroke Road.. After surveyor George Stephenson completed his surveying of centralJefferson County in 1828 he designated a section of land lying west of Cemetery Hill (present day I-465) including parts of present day TerreHaute Township as home for his new village called "New Paris". The Post Office at this location opened on July 3rd 1830 under the name "Paris". New Paris soon outgrew Paris so it reverted back to its original name upon establishment of Indianapolis Municipal Corporation under an act approved by Congress on November 1st 1830 .. On January 1st 1835 US Postmaster General Simon Cameron set up an office within New Paris limits at Cairo Market House where he processed mail from all over Indiana ..
