In 1907, Terre Haute became one of five cities inIndiana (along with Indianapolis, Bloomington-Normal, Muncie and West Lafayette) that were merged into the new state ofIndiana under the name “Indianapolis-Andover-Terre Haute”. The growth of Indianapolis had slowed down during World War II because so many people were drafted into service overseas and few jobs opened up in terms of housing or business opportunities after the war ended. This changed beginning in 1949 when President Truman decided to create an area called “The Inner Cities Program” within his New Deal program which aimed to improve economic conditions throughout America by creating job opportunities for innercity residents. This program included plans to build apartment buildings, open stores in innercity areas and provide other forms of assistance such as loans for businesses who would then be able to expand their reach into surrounding neighborhoods. These efforts led to increased development around central downtown Indianapolis while also creating new housing options for those living outside central Indy. Today, much has changed since these early days including changes in technology which have caused significant increases in traffic congestion on some portionsof I-65 near downtown Indianapolis while also decreasing demand for traditional office space within central Indy limits
