The Terre Haute, Indiana National Guard was organized on July 1, 1916. The unit was originally called the Indianapolis National Guard and served in various capacities until May 1945 when it was re-organized as a separate battalion of the army. Since World War II the Terre Haute, Indiana National Guard has fought in many conflicts including the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. In 1990, the Terre Haute, Indiana National Guard placed second in the nation in terms of total active duty military members with over 146 officers and men. The Terre Haute, Indiana National Guard is currently composed of 7th Infantry Regiment (7IR), 9th Infantry Regiment (9IR), 12th Infantry Regiment (12IR), 14th Infantry Regiment (14IR), 15th Infantry Regiment (15IR) and 17th Cavalry Squadron (17CS). The present organization dates back to the Terre Haute Veteran's Battalion of the Indiana National Guard and the Indiana State Militia, which were merged on February 28, 1916. The battalion moved to its current location in downtown Terre Haute in 1942.

The city of Terre Haute, Indiana was founded in 1827 by a group of French Canadians who had landed on the banks of the Ohio River. The city grew rapidly during its early years, becoming one of the largest in the United States. By 1840, Terre Haute had reached its peak as a manufacturing and trade center. However, during the American Civil War, Terre Haute saw a great deal of violence and destruction. Many homes were burned down and businesses were looted. In 1865, when the Union surrender came about at Appomattox Court House, Terre Haute's role as an important trading node ended and it declined rapidly throughout the remainder of the war. By 1870, most of what remain today of downtown TerreHaute were destroyed in a fire that swept through the city. Despite these setbacks, however,TerreHaute managed to maintain some degree of stability until 1887 when a devastating tornado struck that killed over 100 people and injured thousands more. This event is considered to be one of America's deadliest natural disasters ever. After this tragedy many residents decided to move out of town for fear another such storm could strike at any time. Over time though, some new residents began moving back into town and started to rebuild what little remained from previous eras. Today there is still much that makes TerreHaute special; its vibrant cultural scene – including numerous restaurants and nightlife options – as well as its rich history which can be seen all around townendant from various heritage-listed buildings like The State Capitol (built in 1892) to local churches like St Francis Xavier Cathedral (founded in 1850).
