A new town was founded at what is now downtown Terre Haute on May 16, 1815 by Captain Nathan Lyon with aid from settlers led by Daniel Boone In 1819, Territorial Governor Andrew Butler issued an ordinance establishing the village of Terre Haute as an incorporated town under state law with voting privileges for white males eighteen years or older and free women over fifty-five years old who resided within one hundred miles (160 kilometers) of its center.
