The Air Force gift history in Terre Haute, Indiana can be traced back to World War II. The war brought airmen and their families together from all over the United States, and Terre Haute was no different. In 1947, the city donated a hangar to the service and soon thereafter, Terre Haute became home to one of the most extensive Air Forces installations in the country. Today, Air Force units stationed here include not just fighter planes and bombers but also helicopters and drones. The gift of a hangar for the military was not an isolated event. The city had been interested in helping support the local community since before World War II. In 1920, it donated land to serve as a public park that would now be known as Memorial Park. That same year, City Manager Harry Kapp donated $5,000 for a playground and swimming pool on Main Street. The donation helped change life for locals in town – within 10 years there were tennis courts (on Highland Avenue), two fire departments (on Wabash Avenue), two hospitals (on Elm Street) and three schools (on Michigan Avenue). In 1949, when construction began on Hawkins Annex – at that time part of Randolph AFB – Mayor John Fritchett offered his front lawn for use as an aircraft hangar. The donation allowed Randolph AFB to expand rapidly during its early years; by 1957 it employed more than 1,500 people including 500 pilots! And what about those who live near or work at Randolph? They have access to ample amenities such as restaurants and shopping malls located less than five miles from base! Today’s Air Force presence in Terre Haute is both large-scale and diverse: UH-60 Black Hawks are based here alongside C-130 Hercules transports; MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles provide surveillance; KC-135 Stratotankers conduct refueling flights; A-10 Thunderbolt attack jets fly combat missions against targets overseas; Paveway III cruise missiles are used for bombing exercises…the list goes on! It’s clear that this community has taken pride in supporting its military servicemen/women with many years of experience ensuring they always have access to high quality gear and resources needed for their job duties!

The gift of an F-16 Fighting Falcon from the 139th FW was donated in 2007 in memory of Col. Doug Kline and Lt. Colonel Ron Hirschfeld who were both killed in a hangar crash while flying their F-15E/F Eagle for the 137th FS at RAF Mildenhall, England on October 14, 2006. The donation was made during a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new $287 million facility being built adjacent to Riddle Field Army Airfield which will house the 138th FS and 136th FS operations along with other wings and services.
Terre Haute is a city in and the county seat of McDonough County, Indiana, United States. The population was 21,737 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in Indiana by population and second-smallest city by land area. The first European settlers in what is now Terre Haute were Frenchmen who founded a trading post on the banks of the Ohio River in 1778. By 1800, most of present-day Terre Haute had been developed as a major town on the east bank of the river. In 1813, when Congress created McDonough County, it included all present-day Terre Haute Township and part of what are now Clinton Township and Peoria Township. At that time, only about one-tenth of Terre Haute's total land area was inhabited. During the Indian Removal Act of 1830, many Shawnee led by Chief Tecumseh attacked white settlers near what is now Terre Haute while they were moving their herds across western Indiana to new reservation lands north of Lake Michigan. Some white settlers fought back with firearms until reinforcements arrived from General Anthony Wayne’s Army under Colonel John McClernand; however, most whites surrendered or were driven off before they could reach any significant numbers. In 1836–39, following Ulysses S.. Grant’s Mayflower Compact Expedition through central Illinois intoIndiana Territory (east of Fort Wayne), some 1½ million Native Americans – mostly Potawatomi – migrated overland through Indiana Territory to find new homes in Kansas Territory (northwest of Chicago).approximately two thousand menominee women followed suit overland during this period known as “the Great Migration”; these women constituted a significant share (over 30%)of all Native American female immigrants to North America during this time period Most native people who remained behind after leaving their familiesRefused military service offered to them by United States GovernmentMany treaties subsequent to Indian removal contracts between various groups led by US government and tribes resulted in large tracts for settlement including parts of today’s McDonough County Ancestors still reside here today among numerous cultural descendants

Terre Haute is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in central Indiana, United States. The population was 7,593 as of the 2010 census. It lies on the Terre Haute River, a tributary of the White River. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Terre Haute were French traders who set up a trading post near present day Greenfield in 1785. The area was part of British India until 1801 when it became part of the United States of America. In 1818, John Cook and his party discovered oil wells at what is now Terre Haute and began exploitation. In 1827, James Hennepin erected a frame toll bridge across the White River at what is today downtown TerreHaute for shipping goods between Illinois andIndiana. This bridge remains standing today as one of only two remaining toll bridges in Indiana that were built before the state gained its current name: the other being Pence Bridge over the Hoosier River in Indianapolis). In 1850, local resident David Black build a log cabin named "Dakota" on land he had purchased from Nicholas Sayles. The town started off as just a small settlement with just 10 residents. By 1860, Dakota had developed into a thriving town with a sawmill, grist mill, blacksmith shop, store and several homes. In 1865, Dakota was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer during his funeral procession through town; this event helped spur development around Custer Park which still exists today as one of downtown's most popular attractions. In 1870–71 Congress passed an act designating Terre Haute as capital ofi Indiana Territory due to its importance as an agricultural center during that time period; this designation led to significant growth for the community throughout the next several decades with new businesses (e including banker & insurance agent firms) opening up along with more housing developments throughout downtown areas such as Canal Street/Ohio Street/Michigan Avenue/State Road 12th Street South (now 3rd Street North)/. As late as 1907 there were over 400 residents living inside city limits while only 100 or so lived outside city limits; this trend continued into subsequent years until finally reaching peak levels during World War II when rates ranged anywhere from 300-400 people per square mile within city limits while rates reached 1,000 people per square mile outside city boundaries!
