Speedway is a small town in northwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,685 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Indianapolis metropolitan area. Speedway is home to the World champion stock car racing organization, NASCAR, as well as several thousand other businesses and residents who support professional motorsports. The first track on what are now Speedway's streets was built by George Glover in 1892. The firstNASCAR race took place at Speedway on October 15th, 1903. In 1907, the name of the track was changed from "New York State Fairgrounds" to " speedswept 'n' bright", reflecting its location atop a hill near one of Indianapolis' most important intersections (the New York-bound lanes ran perpendicular to Michigan Avenue). The following year saw the opening of Coca-Cola's first bottling plant in Speedway - an event which helped spur attendance growth and help make speedway one of America's most popular motorsports destinations. By 1923, race tracks had been added all around Pacers area with new sections being built just north and west of Indy (the current business district including Speedway sits on land that once included these tracks). In 1949, American Motors Corporation opened their world headquarters next door to Indianapolis Motor Speedway - this contributed significantly to speedway's continued success over ensuing years as it became one of America's top motor sports venues. One significant change during this time came when office towers were built on either side of the oval for corporate employees - these buildings still stand today and can be seen from much of downtown Indy. In 2002, speedway celebrated its centenary with a series of events which included a weekendlong open-air celebration across four days starting Saturday May 9th climaxing with a grand parade through downtown Indy on Sunday May 10th headlined by country music singer Lynyrd Skynyrd . After being relocated to its current site in 1915, Speedway saw further growth as a racetrack, hosting major events such as the Indianapolis 500 and World's Fair Auto Races. In 2002, Speedway was designated as a National Historic Landmark for its role in American racing history.
