The cafe served delicious nasal cones (coffee beans steeped for a long time) with house-made pastries andItalian style coffee drinks like cappuccinos or lattes. Speedway is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 8,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. Speedway is an agricultural community with a mixed commercial and residential development. It has two churches, one of which is the Methodist church from 1892 and the other being First Baptist Church from 1925. The first track in Speedway was built on land that now houses Mid-America Raceway. The city of Terre Haute was founded in 1873 by Landon Mapes as a stop for stagecoaches between Indianapolis and Chicago. Mapes built a toll gate to collect money from drivers passing through his town. When this system failed, he sold the toll road to John Smeaton in 1888 for $10,000 cash. In 1893,Speedway became an incorporated village and voted to remove its name from the road after hearing complaints about it being called "the speedway". A year later it changed its name back to Speedway when it voted unanimously to become part of Johnson County after voting on a new form of government which allowed villages within county boundaries to vote on their own behalf without having to submit proposals to county officials. The first post office at Speedway opened in 1895 under the name "Cedar Rapids." Speedway is a small town in central Indiana, located on the east side of the state. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mishawaka-native city of Terre Haute. The site where Speedway now stands was originally a farm called White Sands. In 1892, it became an independent village and was named Speedway after Earl Fenton, who had built a track there in 1889 as a race track for horse races. On October 15, 1909, Speedway hosted its first professional football game when it played host to Stroudsburg (now West Chester) Steelers vs. Racine Yellow Jackets. In 1944, as World War II began to drag on and resources were running low in America's warring allies, Speedway temporarily closed due to wartime restrictions on military travel within their borders. In 1946 Speedway reopened as an all-night rodeo arena with events such as bull riding and car racing taking place during daylight hours only; this arrangement continued until 1978 when the facility went completely dark due to increasing costs associated with maintaining an all-night stadium operation).
