Speedway is a city in and the county seat of Henry County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,570 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Speedway was Nicholas Prentiss in 1814. He built a log cabin on the current site of town and named it Prentissville after his father-in-law. A post office called Speedway was established in 1828, and remained in operation until 1836. The first track opened in 1875 by J.P. Morgan and Associates as a race track for horse racing events on rural land that had been donated by General Robert Ewell Buymon estate near present day Noblesville. By 1888, Speedway had developed into one of America's most popular motorsports circuits with over 1,000 events held annually including races such as the Indianapolis 500, NASCAR's Daytona 500, IndyCar Series races (the first being held at Turn One), Tour de France cycling events (the first being held at Paris' Notre Dame), Formula One auto races (the first being held at Silverstone) and more than 100 motorcycle races per year; it remains one of the world's largest motorcycle venues today with an infield surface measuring . In 1909 Speedway became property of The Racetrack Corporation which leased it to be used as a racetrack for stock cars only with speeds limited to 75 mph due to safety concerns about high speed automobiles then available on American tracks; however this limit still applied to motorcycles which were not then considered safe vehicles operated at high speeds above 25 mph or so).
