Shelbyville is a city in Shelby County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shelby County. The city is located on the east bank of the Great Miami River and straddles the border of Shelby and Wayne counties. It has a total area of 34 square miles (88 km2). The first Europeans to visit Shelbyville were French traders in 1699. In 1814, General Josias Beauregard's army passed through this region while campaigning against Native Americans in what is now Ohio; they named the stream after General Beauregard's brother-in-law, James Shelby. In 1835, as part of a general survey by Governor Ford, Surveyor General John Lapp identified land that would become Shelbyville and laid out streets and public squares downtown on May 15th of that year. On January 1st 1860, citizens voted to incorporate as a town under the name "Shelbyville". In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate Major General Edmund Kirby Smith called upon Union forces from nearby Fort Knox to help him retake Nashville from Rebel forces led by General Donelson. Union forces arrived at Chattanooga before journeying downriver to Louisville where they battlered with Confederate General Robert E Lee for control over that city's bridges over the Tennessee River until Union troops forced Lee back into Sherman's Atlanta suburbs on July 24th 1865 – just one day after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C., effectively ending World War II – leaving Shelbyville without an immediate military garrison or enemy presence

In 1827, Colonel Benjamin Shelby purchased land near what is now downtown Shelbyville from David Evans for $6 per acre. He named his new community after himself – “Sirius” – in honor of his birthplace on Sirius Island off Scotland’s coast where he had been born some time earlier. In 1828, Colonel Shelby organized a militia company and raised money to purchase more land around present-day downtown Shelbyville from David Evans for $5 per acre$. He named his new community “Hawk” after Hawk Creek which flows nearby on Jacksonville Road (now South Main Street). A year later, Colter Dunham joined forces with Captain James Henshaw and Major John Silliman to form the Indiana State Militia under Lt.-Gov John Greggerson so that they could protect settlers along Knox Road and Old National Pike from Indian attacks or raiders looking for plundering supplies or slaves. This group known as the Hawks formed an Essencial defensive force against possible raids into Indiana from Illinoisans living west of Lake Michigan until about 1830 when most of this part of central Indiana became part of neighboring Missouri Territory under United States government control following President James Kenedy’s victory over Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Following General Scott’s Expedition against Native American resistance at Fort Dearborn on July 4th–August 8th 1837 which resulted in extensive destruction among their villages along Witham Creek within 500 miles southeast of Detroit;[1] large areas northeastward including much present-day eastern Elkhart County were added to New York Territory under Ulysses S Grant administration following General Scott’s victorious expedition;[2] this region came also included much current-day southeastern Tippecanoe County including parts of today's Township Of Winamac.[3][4][5] At about this time too western Hendricks County also fell victim to heavy hunting pressure resulting mainly from Spanish incursions across Ia Dragahegee Creeks beginning about 1840 followed very soon thereafter by numerous other fur traders onto these regionsImportant water transportation routes between Welland Lake Erie via Georgian Bayou & Great Lakes were developed early due largely to military needs & Father Abraham Davenport Sr.'s effortscarting flour & other goods downriver
Shelbyville was founded in 1824 as a small town on the confluence of the White River and Shelby Creek. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other crops. By 1830, the population had reached 100 people. In 1834, the first post office was established in Shelbyville. The town gradually grew until it became a full-fledged city in 1902.
