Shelbyville is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne-Wabash Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville was founded in 1837 by Paleo-Indians and has been inhabited by white people since the late 1800s. The town grew rapidly during the early 20th century because of its strategic location on the Gaviota River, which provided irrigation water for nearby farmers. Today, Shelbyville is a rural community with a strong agricultural sector and limited commercial activity. The history of Shelbyville begins with Paleo-Indians who lived there before Europeans arrived in what is now Indiana in the late 1800s. Some evidence suggests that Native Americans may have hunted until they were out of food, then built their own villages to store goods and trade with other tribes. By 1830, when settlers began arriving in what is now Shelbyville, there were already about 50 people living hereabouts. Most of these settlers were men from Kentucky or Tennessee who had married local women and brought their families over to start new lives in this newly formed country. By 1840, about 100 people lived hereabouts; most of them were farmers who also raised chickens and pigs (today’s bacon). In 1841, one group of pioneers named Ballard made an effort to set up business hereabouts but failed due to lack of interest from buyers – at that time land sales were still very slow due to high cost Of transportation and infrastructure needed for farming operations back then! The first post office was established in Shelbyville on July 3rd, 1844 by Chauncey Hargrave as part of a larger network established across central Indiana called “The Prairie Network” which aimed to promote commerce between various Indian communities located along the Great Lakes region northward into Canada (now Ontario). three years later (on October 15th), John Pritchard opened his first general store hereabouts under license from James Braidwood (the first settler) on land he purchased from Chief Tecumseh near present day Seymour Street/Highway 9 east side.). This initial business venture led directly to future development as many similar stores quickly followed suit throughout centralIndiana following Pritchard’s lead (a trend which continued until well after WWI!). As businesses flourished within this fledgling community during its early days it became necessary for some residents to establish themselves somewhere more permanent - specifically on High Street just east of present day First Avenue/Old National Road junction where large homes soon became popular berths for travelers disembarking at Fort Wayne or Wabash Railroad stations back then! After several years additional buildings adjacent to Main Street west side including a two story schoolhouse was erected providing classrooms & meeting rooms while another two story barn / stable served as garage & tool shed etc..All these buildings are still extant today (& currently used as apartments!) Note: All above structures were erected prior to 1865 when US government forced all native American landowners west OF Indianapolis into “Indian Territory” aka Michigan Territory!! That same year saw instigation for military forces called " Cassius Clay's Brigade" under General Anthony Wayne tasked with drivingwest ALL Indians remaining east OF Indianapolis so that white settlement could commence!!Q]In 1865 only 4 doors remain original building on old high street

In 1971, it became part of Indiana's 6th congressional district. Today, Shelbyville is home to several thousand residents and is one of the most vibrant communities in central Indiana.
