Shelbyville is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the Monon River. The population was 5,236 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Confederate General Shelby County and its surrounding areas during the American Civil War (1865-1871). The area around Shelbyville was first settled by Native Americans in 1795-1796. In 1814, Lieutenant Colonel William Heath settled a farm near what is now downtown Shelbyville and named it Heathstown after himself. In 1827, John Matson founded an iron works at nearby Carmel and named it Matson & Company after himself and his brother-in-law James Carmichael. In 1830, Indian traders started selling goods along the river to travelers coming through central Indiana on their way to Chicago. Soon enough, these traders developed a network that helped support early Indianapolis growth. By 1840, there were over 25 businesses operating in what is now Shelbyville with over $1 million worth of merchandise sold each year according to local historian Alton Bogue. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to invade Indiana as part of his attempt to overthrow President Abraham Lincoln's administration, he ordered General David Hunter to move forces into central Indiana from western Illinois so that they could attack Indianapolis simultaneously from two different directions - one attacking from the north and one attacking from the south - but Hunter wisely withdrew before he had any opportunity to carry out his orders.
