Seymour is a small town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Seymour post office was established in 1849 and discontinued in 1893. The first settler in what is now Seymour Township was Levi Coffin who arrived from Maryland in 1824. He named his new township after himself and some other early settlers who had accompanied him on his trip to that location. A store and hotel were built near the corner of State Road 6 and US Highway 34 in 1851 by John Dyer. In 1860, the first school was built as a one-room school building on a plot of land donated by David Blythe. The first teacher was Mrs Hilda Goodsell who taught for three years before moving to Shelbyville to become teaching superintendent at Shelbyville Female Academy. By 1870, there were six schools in Seymour Township: three public schools (grades 1-8), one private academy (9-12), and two churches (Episcopal and Methodist). No physical education classes were offered until 1926 when it became an integral part of the overall curriculum at Central High School which opened its doors that year. In 1907, Seymour began receiving mail service from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania which extended into Indian Territory then Oklahoma Territory; however, this service ceased with the opening of Amtrak's Keystone Station east of New York City on May 1, 1973 prior to Seymour's incorporation as a village under the jurisdiction of Terre Haute Municipal Corporation on July 1, 1973. On October 3rd 1992 during ceremonies marking 100 years since that date local citizens voted to change their name from "Seymour" to "Terre Haute." At that time all villages within Terre Haute Municipal Corporation enjoyed consolidated governing authority under one municipal government with responsibility for all aspects such as zoning ordinances; road maintenance; library services; streetlights; fire hall operations; water supply including sewerage systems; refuse collection services; animal control programs including laws against dog fighting or cockfighting etc.; comprehensive planning for development purposes through Neighborhood Planning Committees composed of citizen representatives appointed by Mayor & Council Members with broad discretion over plans/recommendations recommended by committees charge with neighborhood revitalization & redevelopment while also responsible for providing economic opportunity thru targeted marketing & economic development strategies targeting businesses located within neighborhoods

With war coming closer than ever before, few could afford to leave their homes or businesses Republican controlled America for what seemed like an unknown enemy; after World War I ended almost two decades later Seymour experienced another downturn as business stopped growing along with population growth rates which peaked at 1% but then slowly declined back down to 0%.
