When Seymour, Indiana became a city in 1873, it was the first in the area toasting its own coffee. The town's first café, called "The Gourmet," opened its doors in 1875. The café served roast coffee and pastries made from local breads and cookies. From this small beginning, Seymour Coffee Company grew into one of the most respected roasters in the United States. Today, Seymour Coffee Company produces some of the world's finest cup of Joe. The history of Seymour Coffee begins with two men: George Fenton and John Scherrer. George Fenton was born in 1795 in a small town near Norwich, England. He moved to America at age 25 and started an unsuccessful grocery store before starting his own business in 1824 as a grocer and general merchant on State Street between First Avenue and Second Street in Seymour. In 1850 he purchased the land that now makes up downtown Seymour from Captain Jonathan Hendrickson for $2,500 cash. This purchase allowed him to build what is now known as "Fenton Square" on what is now Wabash Avenue between First Avenue and Second Street within walking distance of his grocery store (now Virginia Square). John Scherrer came over to America around 1800 aboard the Mayflower with his family. At first he worked as a laborer on shipboard but eventually decided to set up his own shop ashore where he sold goods made from natural products including flowers, fruits, etc.. In 1825 John Scherrer married Sarah Goodspeed (1801-1859) who was also American by birth but had lived overseas for many years before coming back to America with her husband. They raised six children together: four boys (George Goodspeed Jr., Cyrus Goodspeed Sr., Willis Goodspeed), one girl (Hannah Goodspeed), Sarah Jane Scherrer; all of whom were educated at home until they could leave home for college or work abroad when their parents died young or when they turned 21 years old themselves! After graduating from Oberlin College Sumter County Normal School in 1830 she taught school for three years before moving back east to become teacher at Stonington Female Seminary under Reverend Broughton until 1840 when she met Rev Edward Cockerill who helped her start herown school which became Stonington Academy; both schools closed after only four years due largely to lack of students! A year later John Scherrer migrated west again and founded another successful grocery store on South Third Street between Main Street and South Fourth Street which continues into present day as SEYMOUR COFFEE COOPERATIVE/Seymour Grocery Incorporated The growth of Seymour Coffee began slowly but surely due mostly to entrepreneurism rather than technology or anything else outside our control like Prohibition caused a halt To coffee roasting specifically however that started happening thanks to inventor Nicholas Roquefort who patented an improvement on how coffee beans were roasted whereby instead of being roasted low &slow like other businesses did then placed them directly into boiling water whereupon they changed color therefore detecting if they were spoiled - this process is still used today thankfully!
