The town became a village on November 3, 1829 and was named for Seymour, England. The first school was built in Seymour on October 6, 1830. On March 4, 1836 the village became a town and was renamed Seymour after Stanton Seymour, U.S. Senator from Ohio and brother-in-law of General Wilkinson.
