The growth rate during World War II slowed down but did not stop; the total population of Seymour peaked at 19,711 in 1945. During the postwar years there were several small-scale businesses replaced by larger ones butchery and grocery stores predominated until the early 1960s when retailing began to become more widespread due to new transportation opportunities introduced after Interstate 65 opened up through central Indiana
