Schererville, Indiana is a town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. It lies at the junction of U.S. Route 12 and State Road 323. The town was founded in 1841 by Jacob Scherer and his family. It was named for him because he found a coal mine there. The first stores were established in 1844 and the first school was built that year. The town gained its present name in 1880 when it became part of the newly organized Porter County. In 1902, Schererville had a post office and two hotels; both closed by 1914. However, Schererville saw continued growth until the late 1800s when it began to lose population to larger towns such as Terre Haute and Louisville Slugger Prairie School District No 26's development near Terre Haute which displaced most of the miners from Schererville to fill those jobs with new arrivals from other parts ofIndiana Territory brought over on boats during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
