The Schererville, Indiana community was founded in 1847 by Abram Scherer and his wife Lucy. The town grew rapidly due to the production of mines in the area and it prospered until the end of World War I. After the war, Schererville began to decline as a manufacturing center and its population peaked at around 60 in 1940. However, growth resumed after the arrival of Interstate 64 and an increase in jobs in the area. The population has since trended downward, reaching 30 in 2000.
Schererville is a small town located in Wayne County, Indiana. The population was 5,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1824. The first settler in Schererville was John Scherer and his wife Abigail Bauer. John's brother-in-law Daniel Kline settled in 1826 and family members built a log cabin on the edge of a small creek that ran through the village. By 1830, there were 10 settlers living in Schererville. In 1834, Daniel Kline died leaving four children: Susannah Kline (1835–1901), John Fenton (1837–1910), Priscilla Bauer (1839–1920), and Anna Schafer (1841–1929). Susannah married George Hebardt and they had six children: Franklin Hebardt (baptized December 17, 1845 – died October 6, 1902), Carrie Hebardt (baptized November 3, 1850 – died September 11, 1951), Alfred Hebardt (born May 5, 1853 – died February 22nd 1937) , Everett Hebardt (born January 9th 1861 – died July 8th 1945) ; Emma Fenton Bachelder born December 15th 1865 - she married Harry Landon on March 20th 1889; Newton Bachelder born April 16th 1870 - he married Edith Goudreau on August 2nd 1896; Arthur Bachelder born October 12th 1875 - he married Hilda Larson on May 26th 1905. Forster also had two daughters by an earlier marriage: Margaret FentonHeardt who married Jens Jensen on November 25 th 1901 and Helen Jenson who married George Wiegand on February 7 th 1904 but their marriage ended in divorce after one year. As late as 1940 five generations of Schererville residents still lived together with their husbands and wives living separately except for three living grandchildren from Alice Christensen’s second marriage to Harold Christensen which lasted until her death in 1978. One other granddaughter continued to live with her parents into adulthood until her death in 1990. The next large influx of settlers came during the American Civil War when many citizens fled to Illinois due to fighting or poverty within their stateside communities. Many families moved into towns established by Unionists before they finally evacuated during the war based on fears that General Sherman would march through the area looking for them if war started again north of the Ohio River without their assurances that they would not be harmed or scatter among others like themselves who were then refugees without hope or protection should hostilities resume within our borders again?
