Schererville is a small town in Indiana, located on the banks of the Raccoon River. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Schererville were German refugees who arrived in 1827. The community was originally named "Emmendorf" after an old man who lived there. In 1836, Schererville became the home of Judge Samuel Emmendorf and his wife Eliza Harkness Emmendorf. They operated a sawmill and gristmill here until their death in 1881. Their son George Emmendorf served as sheriff from 1889 to 1893 and 1899 to 1901. In 1907-08, Schererville built a school with funds provided by Mrs. Anna Ladd Burton of Terre Haute. It was dedicated on October 1, 1908 by Reverend J Fenton of the Methodist Episcopal Church (Terre Haute). The school continued to serve through World War II as an air raid shelter during the war years when other buildings were used for military purposes such as army barracks or storage sites. After the war, it functioned as a high school until its closure in 1990-91 due to budget cuts imposed by then Superintendent Drs John A Dickey and Tom Lovejoy Jr.. On July 15, 1933 Schererville residents voted 3-2 against annexation into Decatur Township because they felt that their town would be less developed thanDecatur and they desired more autonomy within their own municipality which they felt would provide better services such as roads and fire protection etc.. In 1951 Schererville voted to annex into Terre Haute Township but this did not happen because of opposition from Decatur residents who felt that annexation would dilute their Town's independence and contribute too much financial support for TerreHaute without corresponding services being given back to them..

As of 2010, there were a total of 21 businesses in Schererville with an estimated payroll of $27 million. These businesses include many high-tech companies such as Intel and Microsoft, but also smaller employers such as Laborers Local Union No. 908 which employs around 100 people; Voiceprinting Services Inc., which employs 50 people; and American Legion Post #362 which has 170 employees. The first settler in what is now Schererville was John Fisk who arrived in 1857 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Settlers began arriving in large numbers during this time frame thanks to Quaker missionaries who were traveling through central Indiana preaching Christianity's message of peaceable coexistence among all races. By 1880, nearly two hundred families had moved into what would become known as "Fisktown". With so many new arrivals came not only political change but social upheaval too: tensions quickly arose between Native Americans residents who lived near water resources while white settlers encroached onto Indian land for agriculture; these conflicts would lead ultimately to violence and displacement throughout much of central Indiana during the late 19th century
