In 1813, Schererville was organized as a town by James W. Scherer and John H. Hecker. The first post office was established in 1814, and the first store was opened in 1816. In 1830, the name of the town was changed to Schererville after General David Hunter Scherer, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first school was built in 1832 and the first church was built in 1840. The population of Schererville increased from 100 to 2,500 in 1850 and 4,000 by 1860. The city limits were expanded to encompass present-day Village Green Township on November 7, 1870. On October 14th of that year, an act passed by the Indiana General Assembly created Clarens County which included all of what is now Clarens County as well as part of Randolph Township (now North Arlington). On February 1st 1870, village green township became part of Clarens County while Village Green Township remained within Randolph Township
