The Schererville Coast Guard Station was established on September 14, 1892 when the town of Schererville and the surrounding area were merged. The station was manned by a group of soldiers from Fort Wayne who were assigned to help guard the Great Lakes. In 1916, the Coast Guard moved to its current location on Main Street in Schererville. Since it’s establishment, the Coast Guard Station has played an important role in protecting our coastlines and waterways. In 1992, they donated their equipment and resources to build a new seawall in memory of those lost at sea during World War II. They also donated land for a park which is now called “Majestic Park” in 2003. Schererville, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of LaPorte County,Indiana, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west bank of the Ohio River. The origins of Schererville are unknown but it may have been named after Nicholas Scherer (1767-1837), an early settler in what is now LaPorte County. He built a log cabin here in 1810. By 1830, Schererville had developed into a small town with a population of around 100 people. In 1836, Schererville was incorporated as a village by James Hennepin and others and soon became known for its flour milling capabilities which made it one of the leading flour towns in the area. The site where present day Schererville stands was chosen to build the first flour mill in Indiana because it was swampy and easily accessible from water transportation routes. The first flour mill operated here between 1840 and 1845. The milling industry declined during the mid-19th century but resumed during World War I when demand for flour increased due to involvement in war efforts overseas. The Schererville area was first settled in the late 1800s by German immigrants. The name, meaning "place where a man camps," is derived from the word Schere (a stream). In 1847, John H.
