The United States Air Force has a rich history that dates back to World War I. The first aeronautical unit, the Aero Club of Schererville, was founded in 1919 and served as the nucleus for later units such as the 4th Aero Squadron and 9th Bombardment Wing. In 1947, when the USAF activated its first operational wing, it was at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. That same year saw the activation of the 7th Aerospace Division at Edwards Air Force Base in California. In 1949, B-52 bombers were brought into service with the USAF and began operations from RAF Fairford in England. Throughout these years, many unique air force gift items have been created or received in commemoration of USAF members or veterans who have made significant contributions to aviation technology or operations. Some examples include: an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter aircraft belonging to Pope AFB; a C-130J Hercules transport plane donated by NASA; an E-3A Sentry AWACS airborne warning and control system; a KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling tanker donated by Boeing; and an RV-10D Blackbird advanced trainerplane gifted by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co., Inc..
The United States Air Force has a rich history of giving back to the community. From donating time and resources to support local charities, to providing air force aircraft and other equipment to public schools, the USAF has always been there for those in need. In recent years, however, the USAF has decided to step up its donation game even more. In an effort to support military families through generous donations, the USAF has launched a new program called “Gift of Life”. This initiative provides financial assistance and emotional support to families of service members who have died inaction or while serving overseas. To date, the USAF has given over $130 million in gift donations. This generosity is not only commendable; it is also incredibly touching. The USAF understands that these families are struggling immensely as they try to cope with their loved ones’ death. With this program in place, though, the USAF hope that it can provide some much-needed comfort and respite for these grieving parents.
The Schererville, Indiana air force gift history began in 1942 when the United StatesAAF donated a P-51 Mustang fighter to the local Air Force. The fighter was used by the Air Force until 1946. In 1951, the United StatesAAF donated an F-86 Sabre jet fighter to the Air Force. The jet was used by the Air Force until 1978. The last donation of an air force aircraft to Schererville occurred in 1984 when the United StatesAAF donated a C-130 Hercules transport plane to the local Air Force.
Schererville, Indiana is a small town located in northeastern Indiana. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Schererville-Butler Township School District serves the town and portions of Butler Township. The town was founded in 1836 by John Dickson and others as a small post station on the new Ohio Central Railroad. In 1857, it became a village when it incorporated as a result of an act of the General Assembly of Vigo County. The original community name may have been "Schererville" because early settlers found fuelstone boulders there to heat their homes from the sun. In 1898, Schererville merged with Butler Township to form what is now called Butler Township School District No. 1 (BTSD). At that time, BTSD included all of Butler Township except for parts of rural Dixon Township which were annexed into BTSD in 1951. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, Schererville has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,711 people, 518 households, and 466 families residing in the township. The population density was 2 people per square mile (0/km²). There were 602 housing units at an average densityof 0 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of Schererville was 98% White and 2% African American; Hispanic or LatinoOf any race were 0%. There are 518 households out of which 30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32% were non-families. 25%of all householdswere made upof individuals and 8%, had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Schererville is a town in Indiana, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville-Portage County, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Schererville was Augustus Hickey in 1827. He built a cabin on the site of what is now the Schererville Municipal Building. In 1830, James Sutherlin settled there and founded the first sawmill in Evansville. The town grew slowly until it became an agricultural center with extensive crop production during World War I and II; today much of that output goes to export markets. In 1969, Schererville approved annexation by neighboring Portage County; since then it has grown rapidly as a bedroom community for Evansville and its many factories and businesses. The citizens of Schererville vigorously resisted annexation by Portage County until voters elected their local government officials to resist any effort to turn them into one large township with few services for their constituents (the so-called "township amendment"). This stand helped keep SchererVILLE open as an independent municipality until recently when other municipalities have sought to annex similar areas without such bickering and resistance from the residents (e.g., nearby Butler). Today,SchererVILLE has experienced rapid growth due largely to high levels of immigration (mainly Mexican) which has brought new people and investment - creating jobs throughout the entire Community! Despite this recent growth there are still some challenges faced by this vibrant community including: lack of affordable housing options & gridlock on major arteries
The first Europeans to visit Schererville were the French in 1634. The area was part of the French and Indian War, fought from 1763 to 1795. After the war, a post office called Schererville was established in 1796. In 1814, Schererville became a town. It continued to be governed by a town board until it was abolished in 1938.
