Richmond, Indiana is a small town in west-central Indiana. It was first settled in the early 1800s by English and Irish immigrants who arrived during the American Revolution. The town became a municipality in 1903. Richmond is located on the north side of the large river, Wabash, which forms its eastern border. The population of Richmond was 5,818 at the 2010 census. The village of Richmond was platted in 1814 by Colonel James Wilkinson and others under the name "Richmond." It was renamed for General Robert E. Lee after his forces fought against British forces in Virginia during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After General Lee's death at Appomattox Court House, his troops took up residence in what is now Petersburg and called it "Richmond." In 1872, when Petersburg seceded from Virginia to become part of Kentucky, Richmond became an independent city under state law. On December 2, 1907, Richmond annexed neighboring towns of Warsaw and Peru to form a new city known as "Richmond-Warsaw." In 1912-1913 two acts were passed by the state legislature entitled "An act to provide for municipal government within Reidsville Township" and "An act to annex villages into cities" which resulted in Richmond becoming a full-time municipal government with responsibility for all aspects of local life including zoning laws; public works; taxation; fire protection; street cleaning; police services; waste management; libraries and parks. In 1924–1925 three rounds of bomb blasts occurred at local businesses near downtown that killed four people and injured seventy-four others

In 1847, Richmond became part of the newly formed Hoosier state when it was created from parts of Illinois and Indiana. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching its peak in 1920. Since then, the city has experienced growth through suburbanization and loss of jobs in favor of new industries such as manufacturing and health care.
