Richmond, Indiana is a city located in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Hancock County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 69,711. Richmond is one of two cities in Hancock County (the other being Terre Haute). The City limits include part of the unincorporated community of New Albany. The first permanent settler in what is now Richmond was Levi Coffin who arrived on July 3, 1814. At that time, it was still part of Henry Township, Butler County. In 1821, Richmond became a part of Clarke County and later renamed to Hancock after General David Hancock who fought at World War I and II. In 1839 it became a part of Vermillion Township which contained all but present-day Terre Haute and New Albany. Hancock had its start as a military post known as Fort Randolph on land given by President James Kenedy for his service during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). It served as a base from which Indian scouts and soldiers could operate against Mexican forces occupying Texas during that conflict. After Fort Randolph's closure in 1853, it continued to serve as an arsenal until 1865 when it reverted back to military use again under then-Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's order No 565 entitled "An Order Amending said Secretary's Order No 1," decreeing that "armories shall be used only for purposes connected with war or defense." In 1865–66 there were also several riots taking place within Confederate army camps across America due to food shortages brought about by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation; these were generally referred to as "the Indianapolis riot". A large crowd had gathered at Fort Randolph early on December 12th when they heard rumors food supplies were running low; soon afterwards there was violence erupting between pro-Unionists and secessionists over control over distribution points for rations among soldiers stationed around Indianapolis; eventually 15 people including 4 officers were killed with another hundred wounded or treated for injuries before Union troops moved in to quell the situation

Richmond, Indiana is a small town located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,828. The Richmond community has been inhabited by humans since at least 1836 when James K. Polk and his family moved from Missouri to this region following the American Civil War. In 1871, George Stephenson built the first locomotive in Richmond on what is now known as Stephenson Street. After a few years of growth and development, rail transportation became available to Richmond in 1914 when the New York Central Railroad reached here from Louisville and Nashville, Tennessee via Richmond Road. The railroad brought with it new jobs for locals who had formerly produced agricultural goods such as hay and straw for horses and buggies or sold eggs from their homes on Second Street between Broad Ripple Avenue and Main Street. In 1915–16, a group of citizens led by Dolph Lundgren pooled their resources to build an all-weather ice rink in downtown Richmond which they christened "The Ice Palace". This facility remains one of the most popular activities in town today and regularly attracts visitors from around Indiana and Kentucky who come to enjoy skating on a frozen pond while listening to live music or taking part in other summer festivities hosted at The Ice Palace which also includes car shows, golf tournaments, carnivals etc.. During World War II (1939–1945), many residents served in our military; examples include: Warrant Officer Harry Estep (USMC) who served during WWII at Camp Pendleton Naval Yard near San Diego California; Technician First Class John Crouch (USAAF) who flew bombers over Japan during operation “Midsomer Murders”; Sergeant First Class Forrest Hargrave (USAAF) assigned to RAF Station Hemel Hempstead Essex England where he flew Spitfires fighter planes; Airman First Class Leroy Jorgensen (USAAF) stationed at Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft factory near Riverside California working on advanced design tasks for this game changer weapon system during World War II...
