A Brief History of Artisan Coffee in Richmond, Indiana In the early 1800s, coffee was a highly prized commodity in America. Roasters and cafes began to form as people started trading goods and services for coffee. The first roastery/coffee house was opened in 1796 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. He roasted and bottled his own coffee, which is still enjoyed today. By 1810, there were over 25 coffeehouses operating throughout America. Some of these houses became famous such as those in New York City or Philadelphia. In 1818, a group of farmers in Richmond, Indiana founded the first artisanal roastery/coffee house in America – The Ebenezer Coffee House. This establishment was known for its high quality beans and delicious cup of Joe. Over the years, many other notable artisanal roasters have been opened within the surrounding areas including: Four Corners Coffee Company (Manhattan), Westpoint Coffee Company (Chicago), Java Junction Coffee & Tea from Indianapolis (Independence County), Blue Bottle Coffee from Berkeley (California), etcetera. These roasters often focused on unique flavors and methods that set them apart from their competitors. As the industry grew morecompetitive with mass-produced beans and cafés emerged throughout America, many artisanal roasters closed their doors or changed their focus altogether to focus solely on producing top-quality coffeebeans at an affordable price point for consumers everywhere!

Many new cafes opened up during this time including Blue Bottle Coffee & Cafe which relocated from Indianapolis in 1971; One Fifth Street Coffee Company which opened in 1978; and Poste Restante Coffee & Artisan Bakery which moved into its current location in 1993. These cafes quickly gained national attention and helped revive the city's struggling café culture. In recent years, there have been several successful attempts by cafe owners to reopen old failed businesses such as The Sparrow on Dayton Avenue (closed 2018) or Mama’s Café on Washington Boulevard (closed 2019).

Richmond, Indiana is a small town in rural central Indiana. The community was founded in 1838 by General John Marshall. It was named for George Washington's home of Alexandria, Virginia. Richmond was the site of the first successful Indian War campaign against the Shawnees in 1813. In 1917, Richmond became a city and retains its role as an agricultural center. However, after Reconstruction ended, Richmond struggled to maintain its status as a major financial center and declined into obscurity until recent times.
