Airforce gift history in Richmond, Indiana began on October 1, 1947 with the purchase of two Beechcraft Airplanes by the City of Richmond. The planes were dedicated to the city’s military and police departments and were used for various purposes including fly-overs during parade days, demonstrations, and funerals. In 1976, the City of Richmond passed an ordinance that allowed for donation of surplus airframes to any organization within city limits. This ordinance also granted city officials authority to issue commemorative certificates honoring contributions made by Air Force aircraft or members of the Air Force community to Richmond. The airport was renamed Davis-Monthan Air Force Base on May 1, 1984 in honor of General Curtis LeMay who served as Commander in Chief from 1951 until his death in 1989. The base is home to numerous USAF Reserve units as well as a number of civilian airlines which offer passenger service at Reagan National Airport.
The USAF has a rich history that dates back to World War I. The first organized United States Air Force was established on July 18, 1917 as the American Volunteer Group (AVG). On November 8, 1918, the First World War ended with the Treaty of Versailles and the formation of the new Allied forces. The AVG was disbanded on December 31, 1918. On October 20, 1923, General Hugh Dowding activated the RAF as an air arm of the British army. Dowding wanted to create an air force that could compete with those of Nazi Germany and Italy. As a result, RAF squadrons were converted from Aviation units into military aviation organizations. In 1934-1935, RAF Fighter Command was created to provide fighter protection for Britain's airports against attack by Luftwaffe bombers. In 1939-1940 RAF Bomber Command conducted air raids on German cities in order to destroy coal supplies and factories important to Nazi Germany's war effort. These raids also killed many civilians and caused great damage. Aftermath of these bombings led to public opinion against air power in general and against RAF Bomber Command in particular during World War II. However, after Dunkirk evacuation in June 1940 Army Air Forces started providing strategic bomber support for This helped convince Winston Churchill that bomber groups should be transferred from Fighter Commands to Bomber Commands effective at later stages of war in order to increaseAAF offensive capability

Richmond, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area and third-smallest city in the Indianapolis–Carmel Combined Statistical Area. Richmond is located on I-465, just east of Indy's central business district and north of Lucas Oil Stadium for American football games. The name "Richmond" comes from two sources: one being a grant from King George III to Andrew Jackson in 1812 and another being a location mentioned by James Butler (the first governor of what would becomeIndiana) as early as 1795 when he noted that there were three huts on this creek near present day Richmondtown. At one time there were over 100 Indian villages around this area, with many cultural relics still extant including tombs and burial mounds still standing today! The original settlement was on land granted to John Nicholson by France in 1797-1802 but it wasn't until 1811 when French began granting lots to settlers that development began along what became known as Hull Road/I-465 corridor specifically for white people only! In 1815, Henry Dearborn founded Dearborn County which included much of today's Richmond Township including today's downtown area! In 1865, Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after failing to gain an overall victory against Union forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman across Virginia during the American Civil War - effectively ending slavery in America for all except men who held enslaved families offshore aboard ships captained by slave captains! As part of Reconstruction following the war, Richmond became a center for African American culture with dozens of businesses open toAfrican Americans throughout most of those years - something not possible or happenstance anymore since segregation ended nationally 50 years later!!! One significant event that occurred while residents lived here during this time period was Memphis Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's famous "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" ad campaign which ran during baseball season throughout most of 1997!!! This rediscovered marketing classic helped start an era where advertising restrictions were eventually lifted nationwide!! Many wellknown athletes started their careers or continue working out here such as Reggie Jackson (Gatorade), Peyton Manning (McDonalds), Michael Jordan (Jordan Brand), LeBron James (Lululemon Athletica) & more... It didn't stop there though; both professional hockey teams - The Blackhawks and Sabres - came through town playing some memorable games at old Municipal Auditorium starting in 1998!!! What followed was an era full of growth with many new businesses opening up along Hull Rd/I-465 Corridor including several million dollars worth of mixed use projects built within these same boundaries beginning prior to then!!! It has been said that if it ain't broke don't fix it and so it seems like things have kept moving forward here since then... especially considering we are now celebrating our 130th year anniversary coming up next year!!!!!
