There is no one definitive account of how coffee became popular in Portage, Indiana. However, there are a few accounts that suggest an early form of espresso machine was used to make coffee and tea for the townspeople. In 1868, John Crouch opened the first restaurant in Portage and started serving coffee. The popularity of coffee soon spread throughout the community and by 1870, every household in town had their own espresso machine. Theodore Roosevelt also enjoyed a cup of joe at his home in Indianapolis during his presidency. This may have been helped along by the fact that many Indianapolis businesses were located near the city's famousChestnut Street Coffee House which served up delicious espresso drinks all day long (and still does).
Portage is a small town in the southcentral region of Indiana. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Chicago, Indianapolis and Columbus Railroad line. The first European settlers in what is now Portage were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in 1802-3 seeking to evangelize Indian nations. Some of these early settlers built log cabins along the Clear Fork of the White River, which formed part of present-day Portage Township. In 1846, whennder George Stephenson built his first steam locomotive in nearby Crawfordsville for the Indianapolis and Erie Railroad, he donated land to become part of Portage Township. The township was named after him, with a change from "Crawford" to "Portage". The village of Crawfordsville began to grow around this time as people came to trade goods with the Indians living near by. By 1870, there were over 150 residents living in Portage Township. A post office was established at Portage in 1872; it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. An oil well was drilled east of town by Standard Oil Company employees under contract with local farmers during World War I; however, due to an oil embargo that followed World War I, production ceased entirely within two years and no wells were completed or plugged until after 1945. The community experienced significant growth following Prohibition's repeal in 1933; businesses flourished as bootlegging became less common and Crafting became more popular among American citizens searching for cheaper alcohol than imported products from abroad. In 1937–38 (the year before statehood), a new high school building was erected on land grant from General Robert E Grant; it remains one of only two coeducational high schools operated by Local School District No.-1 (later portions of Calumet County) west of Chicago.) During this time period also several important organizations were founded including: The Christian Fellowship Church (now known as First Baptist Church), United Methodist Church (built 1915), Kiwanis Club No.-2 (founded 1921), Masonic Lodge #5222 (founded 1926). These churches helped make portage a thriving community and attracted many families fleeing prohibitionism throughout much OFIH territory during this era

Portage, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana and is the county seat of Cass County. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. In 1814, the United States Congress passed an act to create a port on the Rhine River in what is now Germany. named after General Anthony Wayne and James Kayser Wilkinson, it was to be a transportation link between American ports on Lake Michigan and German ports on the Rhine River. Portage became one of several key points along this route. It was also from here that General Andrew Jackson moved his army during the Battle of Antietam in September 1862. The first permanent white settlers in Portage were Peter Van Dorn and family who arrived in 1788. They built a log cabin near present-day downtown Portage. A mill wheel was erected soon afterwards for grinding flour for local consumption orexport to Chicago and other cities on the Great Lakes region. Other early businesses included sawmills, gristmills, cheese factories, saddleries, wagon shops and mercantile stores before becoming agricultural production operations such as Farmland Farms Dairy & Clothing Company which prospered until 1978 when it merged with QuikTrip Incorporated to form QuikTrip/Portage Corporation (later known as Ameritech). The area around today's downtown Portage had been inhabited by Native Americans for hundreds of years prior to European exploration of this region. One account relates that French explorers found Ottawa Indian Village located about seven miles east of what is now downtown Portage while exploring this part of Northwestern Indiana in 1675–76; they called it "Anadarko" meaning "the place where there are many trees." The village remained undiscovered until 1789 when French fur trader Jean Nicolet explored these areas southward from Fort Wayne while en route to St Louis; he reached Ottawa without encountering any Indians living thereabouts! After landing at Anadarko he named it La Pointe des Assiniboines meaning "the point where we have seen many Assiniboines." In 1792 Ulysses S Grant visited this area while
