Portage, Indiana is home to a small batch coffee history. The first place to sell small batches of coffee was the Rucker Cafe in 1911. In 1922, the first store in the city opened with a small shop on Sixth Street called the kiosk. The first café in town was called The Coffee House and it operated from 1928-1929.
Portage is a town in Armstrong County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Portage were French traders in the early 1700s. In 1802, General David Wilkinson founded a military post here and named it Fort Dearborn after his home state of Illinois. The post served as an artillery battery during the War of 1812 and later became a depot for wagons and other goods coming through the area on their way to points north. In 1827, two brothers founded a cooperative flourmill in what is now Portage Township. This mill provided flour for local farmers who used their own horses to haul it to market from the township center on State Road 3 near present-day I-69 and US 41/West Michigan Avenue. By 1840, about 60% of all flour produced in Armstrong County was being shipped via Portage Mill into neighboring counties. The arrival of railways in Indiana during the late 19th century led to increased shipments and more jobs for portiers or carriers working along those tracks. With new mills opening up all over central Indiana, workers began moving away from rural towns such as Portage into larger villages and cities throughout the state by World War I. At its peak in 1925, there were over 500 portiers employed in Marion County alone! During World War II, many residents lost their jobs when manufacturing plants closed down due to wartime rationing; however, they continued to provide essential services like grocery delivery until that time too (though locally). Afterward, many people returned to work but few started families again because there wasn’t enough available land out there once businesses had stopped operating or been converted into apartments or condos. Portage, Indiana is a town in Union County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Portage settlement was founded on the site of present-day Portage on November 10, 1814 by Nicholas Ladd and his family as a stop on their journey from St. Louis to Cincinnati. By 1819, Ladd's heirs had moved the community to its current location east of Lebanon Road and south of Third Street due to rural unrest over an act by Congressman Anthony Wayne that granted land grants for agricultural development in what is now Union County. In 1827, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in America here; it ran between Longitude (now Evansville) and Cairo (now Terre Haute), Illinois until discarded in 1862 when Stephenson's company merged with other railroad builders into the unified American Railroads. In 1865, General John Fetterman organized a brigade of volunteers called "The Fighting Fifty" to suppress a slave insurrection near Athens, Ohio led by Elijah Whitehurst and James Merryweather. After routing Whitehurst's forces at Monongahela Plains on October 12–13th 1865, General Fetterman ordered his troops into camp at Fort Dearborn northwest of Warsaw after learning about the uprising from local militia leader David Wilkins who reported seeing black slaves being whipped inside Fort Dearborn barracks while under military guard (). After days of skirmishes and artillery fire that left several hundred white casualties including one officer killed and two dozen wounded, Whitehurst surrendered unconditionally on October 17th 1865 without any shots being fired in return. This event is generally considered asthe beginning of the end for slavery in Great Britain & Ireland (). In 1922 when Union County was admitted to the United States as part of Indiana Territory it became known as Portage Township with its current name reflecting its early settler roots: "Portage" meaning 'old fort'. On July 9th 1932 during construction of I-69 eastbound through Portage Tunnel traffic backed up for more than three hours due to faulty welding done during enlargement work on exit ramps leading off I-69 onto Route 66 just north of town center; this caused serious damage to several businesses within town limits which were fully repaired within weeks but have never recovered financially from their impact. The tunnel reopened six months later after costing nearly $100 million ($ in today's dollars). In 1977 Wabash Railroad donated land adjacent to downtown for use as a shopping mall; this project failedTo gain approval from residents because it required demolition or extensive modification beyond what they could afford without surrendering city rights which they maintain today even though portions face danger from redevelopment projects underway nearby. As recently as 2000 there were plans pending by developers for condemnation and razing much older historic buildings within town limits along with replacement structures designed primarily for commercial use rather than residential purposes which would result in increased traffic congestion around downtown core while reducing accessibility due both toaccessibility problems surrounding existing streetscape/viaducts as well as new transportation improvements planned or already under construction nearby if approved . These proposals also include widening sidewalks throughout townlimits away from busy thoroughfares serving commercial corridors rather than providing pedestrian/bike routes connecting central business district with less developed areas outside urban boundaries thru village green spaces
