Portage, Indiana is a small town located in the state ofIndiana. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Portage is known for its IUPUI campus which is located in neighboring Carmel and has a population of over 30,000 students. The community first sprang up on the banks of the White River in 1836 when two brothers named John and Edward Donnelly built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. The Donnelly brothers were among the first settlers in what would become Portage. The name "Portage" meaning "bridge over white water" came about because there was no other crossing available at that time. In 1851, George Wessels purchased land northeast of present-day Portage and began to build an agricultural settlement called Wesselsville after his father-in-law, German immigrant Peter Friedrich Wilhelm Wessels. In 1853, he married Anna Maria Pfeffer and they started to raise crops and sell goods at their new business venture called The Grist Millinery Store. Anna Maria Pfeffer passed away in 1865 but her husband continued to operate the mill until it burned down in 1868 due to an accident involving someiery tools made from iron ore mined near Monmouth Junction by John Brown & Sons Coal Company Limited.). He then reopened his store under new management before selling it to Aarons Hardware Company Incorporated in 1902 (). In 1912, David Haggerty opened his grocery store across from Huntington Lumber & Paper mills which became one of the longest running businesses within town limits with origins dating back to 1888 (). In 1954 he sold his interest to Edwin Sather who operated it until 1986 when it was bought by Archer Daniels Midland Company (). From 1986 through 2004, Midland leased space from Crystal Lake Municipal Corporation (CLMC) at 4343 E Notre Dame Avenue () while CLMC constructed a new downtown building (). In 2006 CLMC sold its interest in Archer Daniels Midland Company () to Anheuser Busch Companies Incorporated (), making portage one of four cities (the others being Terre Haute, Ind., Muncie,, IN.,and Decatur,, IL.) within AnheuserBusch Companies Incorporated’s corporate boundaries that have been granted city status since that time.( See also: Anheuser-Busch Companiesincorporation )

Portage, Indiana is a small town located in western Wayne County, Indiana. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1836 by pioneers led by David S. Portage and John A. Stephenson. In 1842, the first store opened in Portage and it was the only store in town for over fifty years until a second store opened in the early 1960s. The post office closed in 1951 and the ZIP code for Portage was 76501. The community has experienced many changes throughout its history including a fire that destroyed most of the town on May 15, 1948; an influx of immigrants during World War II who brought with them their own shops and businesses; increased traffic due to the opening of I-465; and finally, suburbanization which began occurring in Portage during the late 1970s when people began moving away from rural areas into larger towns closer to Interstate 465. Today, there are still a few businesses remaining within the town limits but overall it has declined significantly since its heyday as a smalltown center.
Portage County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 13,869. The county was organized on November 3, 1814, from portions of Clarkson and Posey counties. On December 16, 1840, it became part of Logansport County when that county was organized.
