Portage is a city in and the county seat of Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 10,611 at the 2010 census. The area now constituting Portage was first settled by the Choctaws in 1824. In 1836, the town of Easton was founded on the south side of the Wabash River by General David Dixon; it was renamed Portage in 1840. In 1851, a group of settlers from Kentucky set out from Paducah to establish what would become Portage; they arrived on February 2,1851. They named their new community after General Daniel Dixon (1785-1855), who had been instrumental in helping to win independence for Kentucky from England during the American Revolution. The town rapidly grew and became one of the most important centers of industry in Morgan County during its early years; it became an important stop on stagecoaches between Chicago and Indianapolis. In 1865, when rural eastern Morgan County became part of INDIANAPOLIS COUNTY, Portage came under that county's jurisdiction and continued to grow as an industrial center. During World War II portages served as storage areas for munitions being stockpiled by the military in nearby Fort Knox; however, after 1945 much of this infrastructure deteriorated and eventually fell into disrepair. After many years of neglect various efforts have begun over recent decades to rehabilitate or even demolish many portions of these structures as part of a larger effort to create a more vibrant downtown area for Portage which has seen significant progress since 2000 .
In 1821, the area became part of the Indiana Territory. The first permanent settler in this area was Nicholas Fenton. In 1832, a post office was established at Portage. It operated for six months before being closed due to lack of customers. In 1834, a school was built at Portage and operated for three years before it was shut down due to financial problems. A new school was built in 1836 and operated for four years until it too closed due to lack of students. The first store in this area opened in 1840. It served as the only store in the territory until 1846 when a second store opened at Portage and continued to serve as the only store until 1850 when another store also opened at Portage. A bank was established at Portage in 1840 and it served as the primary bank in this area until 1862 when an inferior bank replaced it. The first post office on the present-day site of town was established on May 10,1850, serving as an important link between rural Indiana and Fort Wayne across the river. The first mail service arrived here on October 3,1851 from Fort Wayne via boatman who delivered mail overland through what is now known as Anthony’s Bridge into Clearwater Township which then sent letters by stagecoach north to Indianapolis via Decatur Street/Portage Road (now I-65)
