Portage, Indiana is a town in Pence County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pence County. The first people to live in what is now Portage were the Potawatomi Indians. They crossed the Wabash River into this area about 1800 and began to settle hereabouts. A post office called Portage was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1837, a group of settlers named Hendrickson arrived from Illinois and platted what is now Portage Township on land they had acquired east of present-day Lafayette Street and north of the Wabash River. This township was renamed for General Anthony Wayne (1775-1850), a hero of the American Revolution who served as Commander-in-Chief Northwest Territory under George Washington during the period 1789‑1800. In 1847, when Indianapolis became an incorporated city, General Wayne's old township became part of that city limits; it has been continuously policed by police officers since then. The town of Portage grew rapidly after its incorporation as a village in 1903 due to its location at one end of Vincennes Road – which connected Lafayette with Indianapolis – and its easy access to transportation via railroads and roads. By 1950, Portage had outgrown its original boundaries by taking in parts of neighboring townships including Uniontown (1902) and New Albany (1920). In 1957, following the merger of two other townships into Pence County – Uniontown Heights (1927) and Westville (1928)) – Portage officially became a town once again. Today,Portage is home to many businesses such as hospitals/medical centers/research institutions as well as small grocery stores/cafés along with several high schools along with several churches including The Methodist Episcopal Church Ft Wayne which services both traditional Protestant services alongside evangelical Lutheran services There are also several auto dealerships making this an important commercial center for southeastern Indiana

Portage, Indiana is a small town in the state of Indiana. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is located about 20 miles east of Indianapolis and about 25 miles southwest of Fort Wayne. The first white people to arrive in what is now Portage were fur traders from Montreal. They arrived in 1814 and started trading with the Native Americans around present-day Portage and White River. In 1817, Ohioan settlers began arriving and by 1830 there were over 100 residents living in what is today Portage Township. In 1834, Indiana Territory was created from portions of Michigan Territory and as part of that territory, Portage became part of the new county seat for Allen County. By 1840, the population had grown to 2,500 people with a school, jail and grocery store existing in what is now downtown Portage. When Fort Wayne was founded in 1847 as an American military base on the southern end of Lake Erie, it needed a location for its soldiers to encamp during their stay on site. The fort was built on land that later became Downtown Indy. The city grew up around it soon after - becoming one of America's largest cities by 1860 with over 60 businesses within its boundaries alone! The growth of the city led to increased development around downtown including construction of new bridges across the White River (the first being completed in 1851), streetscape improvement (including grading and paving much earlier than most major U.S cities) as well as additions such as a movie theater (the first being built in downtown Indianapolis), hotels (the first two being built near where Union Station now stands), offices (the first three buildings existing today being erected between 1861-1865), restaurants (opened up mainly along Washington Street NW) and more!
