Gun gift history in Portage, Indiana began with the purchase of a rifle by George Washington in 1786. It wasn’t until 1865 that the first gun store was opened in this town. The store proprietor, John Kapp, imported shooting rifles and shotguns from France and Belgium. He also sold ammunition and sporting goods to customers who came to visit him at his store. In 1868, the first handgun was purchased in Portage by Wm. A. Stephenson. The handgun was made ofsteel and had a knuckle-guard on the frame for protection against fingers injury when handling it. It is believed that this handgun was used by George Armstrong Custer during the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1890. Portage, Indiana is located in the state of Indiana, on the Ohio River. It was named for General Anthony Wayne, who fought in the American Revolution and was highly respected by his fellow officers. The town began to develop after a surveyor discovered land there in 1795. In 1825, Portage became a village when it merged with nearby Merrillville. The population of Portage reached 2,200 by 1830 and peaked at 4,000 in 1850. However, the town declined as manufacturing moved out to larger cities during the 19th century. Today, Portage has a population of around 1,500 and is home to several small businesses.
