Portage, Indiana is a small town in Wabash County, Indiana, United States. The population was 554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wabash County. The first European settlers in what is now Portage were French fur traders and their Indian guides who came through the area in search of land to sell during the 17th century. A post office was established at Portage in 1827, and a courthouse was built soon afterward. The village of Portage began to form around this time as people from surrounding towns started moving into it to take advantage of its good soil, water resources, and permissive laws for religious faiths other than Protestantism. In 1875, a railroad station was built on the Miami River near present-day Village Park and development continued until after World War II when most of the town's growth happened outside of the incorporated limits. In 1955, President Harry S Truman dedicated a new freeway system called I-65 across central Indiana that included a portion of what is now Portage Township.
