The Army has been in the area for many years, and Portage is one of their most recent strongholds. The city was founded in 1836 by General Andrew Jackson and it became a military town during the American Civil War. It served as a base for Union forces and was also instrumental in helping to win the war. After the war, Portage grew quickly and soon became a major center for military activity in the region. In 1907,Portage was renamed Fort Wayne after General George Custer, commander of Union forces at the time. The city has since undergone several renovations and expansions, including a new downtown district that was built in 2007. Today,Fort Wayne is an important strategic location within Indiana and Michigan; it is home to both US Army Garrison Command (AGC) and US Marine Corps Base(MCB). One of the earliest examples of army gift history comes from Captain James Kapp’s donation of cannons to the fortifications of Portage on December 15th, 1825. At that time, Fort Wayne consisted only of Fort Dearborn – a small garrison located on Mud Lake – and two guns had been donated by Captain Kapp himself! Over time, other soldiers have donated property or munitions to help promote military activity within the area. In 1853-54, Major General David Dixon sent troops into action against Mexico near Vincennes; part of his effort included purchasing cannon from various sources in order to arm the fortification. During World War II, artillery guns were donated by soldier families living within miles of Ft Wayne so that they could be used against Germany! The Portage, Indiana Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1815. The unit was first organized in 1815 as the Third Regiment of Indiana Volunteers under the command of Colonel John C. Macon. After being redesignated the Seventh Regiment in 1825, the regiment fought at Cold Harbor during the War of 1812 and then served in several engagements against Native Americans. In 1830, the regiment was redesignated as the Eighth Regiment and served until it was disbanded in 1846. In 1861, after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, elements of the portage militia volunteered to Join Confederate forces fighting for secession. The regiment served throughout the war and participated in various battles including First Manassas and Antietam. Afterward, elements of this regiment were mustered out in 1865 and its members were recombined with other units within the army to form what is now known as The Portage Infantry Regiment (IU) today.
Portage, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 7,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage County was Nicholas H. Beattie in 1814. He built a log cabin on the banks of the current Don River, about four miles downstream from present day Portage Heights. Beattie named his settlement after General David Porter's brigade that fought at Ziegfeld's Follies theater in New York City on December 12, 1862. The community of Beaver Dam was founded by settlers who came overland from Pennsylvania during the 1840s and 1850s. On October 15, 1856, it was moved to its present location near what is now North Bend and east of I-465. As a result of its location between two major railroad crossings (the Ohio River to the north and Michigan Avenue to the south), Portage quickly became a resort town for farmers and their families seeking easy access to markets and transportation options for their goods. In addition, as more people began moving into central Indiana during the late 19th century, portages became hubs for social activity including churches and school systems; also important were local businesses such as grocery stores and gristmills that served as cultural institutions within this rural environment. During World War II much of what is now downtown Portage was used as an airbase by American forces conducting bombing raids against Germany; parts of downtown remain vacant today because these structures were not replaced with appropriate civilian uses after war ended." Today, many residents continue to work in traditional sectors like agriculture or manufacturing while others have elected to move into larger suburban areas closer to services or knowledge economy fields where they can find greater opportunity for growth potential."

Portage is a village in Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Portage Township was James Caldwell in 1814. The first post office in town was established on December 1, 1830, and named Caldwellsville after James Caldwell. In 1835, John Hargrave started a sawmill here and soon developed other businesses in town including a grocery store and blacksmith shop. By 1840, most of what is now Portage had been built and it grew quickly thanks to its strategic location near the state line and access to transportation such as stagecoaches that brought people and goods from Illinois toIndiana. In 1847-48 two groups of pioneers led by Levi Coffin from Crawfordsville came through the area looking for land grants; one group found land at present day North Bend while the other group located land around where today's Southport is located. When they arrived they erected cabins near what is now Hudson Street which became known as "Coffin Hill". They began farming their new land but during the early years there were few crops because of lack of rainfall or freeze/thaw problems associated with this harsh climate. However over time some corn crops were grown (eagerly anticipated by planters) while others were used for hay production; eventually these operations produced enough cash income to support local services such as schools and churches despite limited resources available to them at that time During this era many Signers of the Declaration of Independence lived or worked in or around Portage: George Rogers Clark, James Ketchum (a signer), William Aspinwall (a signer), Simon Fraser (an artist), Nathanael Greene (a signer), John Laurens(a surveyor). As more settlers arrived over time some vacated their homes for newer ones but many kept their farms throughout hard times including during the American Civil War when many residents died from戦争中的病。 Some buildings still standing from this period include Isaac Newton Bryant’s log cabin on Cemetery Road which served as a schoolhouse until 1922 and Judge Muhlenberg’s three story frame house located on Main Street which housed courtrooms until 2009 when it was moved into storage behind First National Bank building before being restored as part of redevelopment efforts adjacent to then I-465 interchange . Portage experienced rapid growth following World War II due largely to Interstate Highway 495 connecting Indianapolis with nearby DeKalb County so much traffic passed through town that street names like Market Street became confusingly interchangeable with I-465 exits leading away from town center along both routes . At one point portions of downtown were considered off limits to pedestrians because all intersections within 3 blocks had at least one exit leading away from town center . Eventually most streets outside downtown became pedestrian only although several are still controlled by traffic allowing access only for vehicles displaying an appropriate handicapped license plate number
