Plymouth is a city in and the county seat of Plymouth County, Indiana, United States. The population was 715 at the 2000 census. It is located on the southern edge of Indiana's Inland Peninsula on the west side of the Monon River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Plymouth were French traders from Quebec who traveled through present-day Ohio in 1679 and 1680. They named their new settlement after a small island in the Monon River that they saw while traveling downstream. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1786 when Capt. John Meigs and his men built a log cabin on what is now Court Street. Plymouth post office opened in 1802. By 1814, only 40 people lived in Plymouth; by 1830, there were only five families remaining near downtown with land holdings totaling . In 1812, Acts of Congress authorized construction of a canal across Indiana's Isthmus of West Michigan which would lead directly to Chicago via Indianapolis and Dearborn Heights. However, because no one wanted to build it, this idea was shelved until 1825 when James Kapp purchased rights from Alexander Henry Ford for $5 per acre (based on ). Kapp started construction but due to financial difficulties died before completing it; his heirs completed it under Kapp's name as "Kapp Canal". A schoolhouse was built between 1830 and 1840 by subscription from citizens. A Methodist church was organized in 1836; it burned down two years later but re-built with Frame structure using local blacksmith shop labor until 1860 when white Methodists took control and used it as their main church building until 1978 when they moved into a new building on Court Street which still stands today. In 1847, residents approved issuance of a town charter with three wards: Northwest (later Harrison), Central (later Orleans) and South (later Jefferson). On March 10th following this vote 3% or £10 worth of property taxDS$ was raised for school district purposes thereby creating Plympton Township which comprised all existing municipalities other than Plymouth Village limits within its borders viz: Clinton Township eastward to Big Creek Road/Upper Big Creek Road northward to those boundaries thence southward along said creek boundary line thence eastward along said creek boundary line to where the village limits end; thus making Plympton Township an incorporated municipality subject only thereto as hereinbefore provided’ (pursuant Page 1 – Constitutional Convention Records 4 vols., 1897–1903). On October 20th1851 by ordinance #382 “An act for annexation &c” passed by Board of Commissioners inhabitants rioted against trustees elected for that purpose &c&e This ordinance provides for appointment instead thereof four commissioners who will be elected annually at large rather than being appointed by Trustees &c….This act established Jackson Township adjacent within corporate limits now part thereof
